Kate Garraway praised by GMB co-star as Derek illness pushes her 'to limit'

Kate Garraway has been praised by her Good Morning Britain co-star Alex Beresford after she confessed her husband’s coronavirus battle has taken its toll on her mental health.

Derek Draper was admitted into hospital in March, and while he is now free of the virus, the disease, according to Kate, has “wreaked extraordinary damage on his body”.

The mum-of-two returned to hosting the ITV daytime show earlier this month, and Alex, who presents the weather, says he has been “in awe” of the TV star who has stayed strong and possibility despite her husband’s health ordeal.

Writing in The Sun, the meteorologist hailed Kate’s strength and said he’s happy to see his colleague back on the small screen.

He wrote: “It has been so uplifting for myself and the GMB family to see Kate Garraway back at the desk, and I hope it’s given her the lift she needs to keep herself, her husband Derek and the kids going.

“When it comes to our sanity, I always say nothing works unless you do. It’s so important we look after ourselves so we can look after everyone else.

“I can’t begin to imagine what it’s been like for her, with Derek battling Covid-19 in intensive care since March, but I have been in awe of how she’s handled herself in public – and like the true professional she is, Kate’s strength has shone.”

Alex explained how he first knew about Kate’s mental strength when she arrived for a Prince’s Trust Palace To Palace 45-mile charity bike ride – but hadn’t trained for the expedition.

There were points when her body was giving up but then her mind would take over and she crossed the line at Windsor Castle with Ben Shephard and me at her side,” said Alex.

“That day I got a glimpse into how strong Kate truly is and, although what’s happened to Derek is incomparable, I saw her fight and know she has what it takes to keep battling for her husband, the kids and herself.”

Kate recently admitted it’s been a “tough week” after visiting Derek in hospital, and while she said she was a” desperate for a step forward”, doctors informed her to be grateful Derek had not taken a step back.

Kate and Ben Shephard had been discussing cats catching coronavirus, when Kate then said Derek was her “own worrying pet”.

“It was quite a tough visit yesterday, he has had a tough couple of weeks, and it’s frustrating.

“But what the doctor said to me is, ‘Sometimes, Kate, a day where nothing has gone backwards and nothing has gone wrong is a positive one’.

“So it’s a stable day, but I am desperate for a step forward.”

GMB continues tomorrow at 6am on ITV.
