Nick Knowles says 'I’ll be back' as BBC make U-turn on his DIY SOS sacking

Nick Knowles confirms he will no longer face the sack from hit show DIY SOS following a breach of strict BBC rules.

It has been rumoured his appearance in the new Shreddies commercial could have cost him his job, which would have put an end to a 22-year career on the renovation show.

BBC bosses reportedly told Nick his appearance on the advert breached their strict advertising rules but the 58-year-old’s recent comments seem to suggest he will remain on our screens.

While speaking to The Sun, Nick said: “I have always said that DIY SOS is more than just a presenting job for me, it’s part of me.

Nick Knowles plays a big part in the new Shreddies campaign but his appearance breached BBC rules regarding playing a similar character to his role on DIY SOS

“It has my heart and working for the BBC for over 22 years is something I have never taken for granted.

“I will continue filming new episodes of DIY SOS over the coming months and will be back on your screens with the purple shirts next year.”

Nick’s appearance on the Shreddies advert fell foul because of how he was portrayed in the advert because the BBC does not allow its stars to replicate or ‘pass off’ the role they play on its content.

In the advert, Nick plays a builder similar to his on-screen presenter role in DIY SOS.

The star has received backing from fans on social media with some branding inconsistencies with Match of The Day host Gary Lineker who advertise Walkers Crisps.

One Twitter user said: “If you think Nick Knowles has broken the rules flogging Shreddies, are you sacking Mr Lineker for the Walkers ads? I know which one is more watchable and does more good.”

While another user said: “If the BBC sack Nick Knowles, then I will never watch BBC or listen to it ever again. Don’t penalise a man who does great charity work for one advert!!”

In a joint statement from the BBC and Nick Knowles: “Both Nick and the BBC have resolved the issue recently reported relating to Nick’s commercial agreements and BBC guidelines. With the campaign still running, Nick will step back from the DIY SOS Children in Need special this year but will be back on our screens in 2022.”

Nick says: “I have always said that DIY SOS is more than just a presenting job for me, it’s part of me, it has my heart and working for the BBC for over 22 years is something I have never taken for granted. The DIY SOS Children In Need special will air in November with a guest presenter and I will be cheering them on from the side lines. I urge you all to focus on the build which will ensure the children get much needed help, not about who is presenting the show. I will continue filming new episodes of DIY SOS over the coming months and will be back on your screens with the purple shirts next year.”

The BBC Says: “Nick is an important member of the BBC family and we are pleased that this matter is resolved. We will resume filming DIY SOS as soon as it’s safe to do so and Nick will be back on our screens in 2022.”
