Our Yorkshire Farm star Amanda Owens has revealed that her eldest son Reuben’s love and flair with mechanics is a talent he inherited from her late dad.
The connection that Reuben, 17, had with Amanda’s father Maurice was “special” and he inspired him to have a career as a mechanic.
Amanda recently opened up about the pain of losing her beloved dad, a “gentle giant”, when she was herself was a teenager.
She spoke about her grief for a campaign she is doing with children’s charity Barnado’s.
Amanda, 46, also revealed in her bestselling book The Yorkshire Shepherdess more about Rueben’s skills..
She said that Rueben’s love of fixing things, which he is constantly seen doing on the show, certainly does not come from his dad Clive.
Amanda wrote: “I think he has inherited this streak from my father.
“It certainly doesn’t come from Clive, whose idea of fixing things is copious spraying with WD40, and if that doesn’t work, hit it with a hammer.”
Remembering her dad, Amanda said he was “always tinkering with his beloved motorbikes” and that he taught her to drive so proficiently, she only needed a few lessons with an instructor before she passed her test first go.
Speaking about when he became ill with a stomach ulcer, she continued: “It was heartbreaking seeing him clearing out all the bikes and cataloguing the parts and spares that filled the garage, cellar and loft.
“I might have known my crankshafts from my con rods but there was a whole lot more stuff that he had accumulated over the years and he was adamant that after he died, we should not be hoodwinked by any unscrupulous buyers.
“Other than making us promise to never sell his compressor, he made every effort to get as much of his collection as possible sold to enthusiasts before he died.”
Elsewhere on the farm, Amanda was left heartbroken when a poorly calf died suddenly, despite their best efforts to save her.
She was torn when it came to telling her daughter Clemmie, four, about the animal’s death, as the schoolgirl had helped to birth the calf.
Amanda and her husband Clive, 66, document the reality of running a farm on their Channel 5 show, and while there are many high points, there are equally lows for the family.
