Jamie Spears says he is willing to step down as Britney's conservator – 'but not yet'

Britney Spears’ father Jamie said he is “willing to step down” as her conservator after news of his legal team making a breakthrough filing on Thursday.

However, his lawyers have confirmed that the filing is not immediate, and says he’ll do so “when the time is right.”

Following the latest update in Britney’s conservatorship battle against her father, his legal team told NBC that he’s not stepping aside at this time.

The filing stated: “Mr. Spears continues to serve dutifully, and he should not be suspended or removed, and certainly not based on false allegations.

“Mr. Spears is willing to step down when the time is right, but the transition needs to be orderly and include a resolution of matters pending before the Court.”

James ‘Jamie’ Spears’ lawyers filed a motion stating he’ll step aside when the time is right

Instead, there are matters pending in the conservatorship which need to be settled before he steps down, they say.

“When these matters are resolved, Mr. Spears will be in a position to step aside,” the motion said.

“But there are no urgent circumstances justifying Mr. Spears’ immediate suspension.”

The filing also argued the petition filed to remove him by Britney Spears’ attorney, Mathew Rosengart, was ‘based on falsehoods’, adding James Spears had been the subject of “unremitting target of unjustified attacks”.

Jamie stepped in to act as conservator after Britney Spears’ public breakdowns in 2008

In response to Mr Rosengart’s filing, his legal team argued he stepped into his daughter’s life in 2008 following her public breakdowns because she was “desperately in need of help”.

The filing said the Toxic hitmaker was suffering emotionally and being “manipulated by predators”.

Mr Rosengart, who was appointed to represent the pop star last month, filed a petition requesting for Jamie Spears to be removed as conservator and be replaced with Jason Rubin, a professional accountant.

The court is set to decide on this request during a hearing next month.

After the news of the recent filing, Britney’s attorney released a statement, feeling hopeful of the future.

He told TMZ: “We are pleased but not necessarily surprised that Mr Spears and his lawyer finally recognise that he must be removed. We are disappointed, however, by their ongoing shameful and reprehensible attacks on Ms Spears and others.”

Rosengart continued: “We look forward to continuing our vigorous investigation into the conduct of Mr Spears, and others, over the past 13 years, while he reaped millions of dollars from his daughter’s estate, and I look forward to taking Mr Spears’s sworn deposition in the near future.

“In the interim, rather than making false accusations and taking cheap shots at his own daughter, Mr Spears should step aside immediately.”
