Inside Stephen Fry's marriage to Elliott Spencer – large age gap to cancer battle

Actor, writer and comedian Stephen Fry has become one of the greatest talents to emerge from the UK, with an outstanding career that spans over an incredible 40 years.

Loved by Brits for his intellectual wit and and for presenting shows such as BBC’s QI, Stephen, 63, has often been awarded for his acting and writing capabilities over the years.

But in 2015, fans were left shocked and rather perplexed when they discovered that the writer had secretly married comedian and photographer Elliott Spencer in a secret ceremony.

However, fans were more concerned when they learnt that Elliot was 30 years Stephen’s junior.

Despite the initial backlash received from fans, Elliott, 34, has been credited for helping Stephen find happiness in his personal life. Not only this but Elliott also supported the star while he was undergoing treatment for prostate cancer.

How did Stephen and Elliott meet?

According to reports by The Mirror, Stephen and Elliot first met in 2012.

The pair were introduced to each other by a friend at a house party and they began dating shortly after the first meeting.

Though the couple were very private about their relationship, they were spotted spending time together often.

They were also seen on separate occasions at the Savoy Hotel in London and the Ascot racecourse in Berkshire, England.

In June 2014, Elliott accompanied the QI presenter to the Tony Awards – however the pair did not pose together.

Despite this, Elliott gave his followers a clue of who he was there for online, when he tweeted a picture of chocolates and an image of Stephen when he starred in Twelfth Night.

Fans were fairly surprised when the actor revealed his engagement to photography enthusiast Elliott.

Taking to Twitter on January 6, 2015 to announce his engagement, Stephen penned: “It’s been wonderful, said Fry. “We’ve not fixed a date and if I had I wouldn’t tell you!

“But I can say it will be sometime within the next year or so.

“As is the way with these things it became public when we filled in the paperwork. It was probably a bit much to expect a quiet ceremony.”

But a few days later fans were stunned when they learnt that Stephen and Elliott had tied the knot in a low key ceremony.

Taking to Twitter again, Stephen gushed: “Gosh. ElliottGSpencer and I go into a room as two people, sign a book and leave as one. Amazing.”

Talking about his marriage in 2016 on the Jonathan Ross show, the actor said: “I still am [married]. I think that may be a record in show business. It’s fabulous.

“It’s terrific, it gets better every day. I’ll sound really childish if I keep doing this but it’s like a miracle really, it’s just such a wonderful thing.”

The couple also had their vows witnessed by a mini Oscar Wilde during the ceremony.

Though their marriage was was a happy union, Stephen and Elliott faced backlash from fans and the press for their 30-year age difference.

The couple’s partnership caused such an uproar that Elliott himself came out to defend their relationship.

Elliott said: “I don’t care what people think. Stephen is the love of my life, the light of my life.

“We laugh all the time,” he continued. “Humour is the binding thing in our life. I think that’s what brought us together.

“It’s been incredible. We met at a house party three years ago after we were introduced by friends. The rest is history.”

Since the pair said “I do”, Elliott has been helping Stephen with his bipolar disorder. He also helped the star with while he was battling with prostate cancer in 2018.

During the time Stephen praised the private doctors who carried out the surgery and also thanked his friends and family for their continuous support. The writer also urged other men “of a certain age” to make sure they get their prostate checked.

“I know its an old cliché but you don’t think it’s going to happen to you, cancer is something that happens to other people,” he said.

Both Stephen and Elliott share a love for the arts and theatre and before the pandemic the pair had been spotted attending various shows and exhibitions.

In addition to this, Elliott also has a passion for music and often expresses his love on social media.

A glimpse at his social media accounts suggests that he is also a concert goer and on February 21 he shared a photo from a Kendrick Lamar show, while crediting the rapper’s ‘great’ performance.

Elliot also appears to have a love for travelling too.

In December 2017 he shared a photo from the Arctic Circle. Stephen and Elliot have also visited the Grand Canyon in Arizona together in July 2017.
