R Kelly’s ex-wife has spoken out about living in “constant fear” over the rapper’s “multiple personalities” during their marriage as the star is convicted of multiple sex crimes
Drea spoke out on Good Morning Britain as she claimed the singer had a Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde-like personality and said she “never knew which version of him you’re going to get”.
The 54-year-old singer, best known for the 1996 smash hit ‘I Believe I Can Fly’, has been on trial in New York and was found guilty of racketeering and eight counts of violating the Mann Act, prohibiting transporting people across state lines for prostitution.
He was found guilty on all counts two years after his initial arrest.
Speaking on the ITV show, Drea said: “It’s constant fear, the intimidation, never knowing which version of him you’re going to get, it’s very much Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.”
Drea also praised the strength of the survivors for telling their stories and for coming forward, but she also spoke of “sitting in a very difficult place”, as she shares children with him.
She told GMB: “I wear two hats – I wear the hat of a survivor and advocate, but I also wear the hat of a mother and an ex wife, so it’s very difficult for me. I feel that my heart is in two places.”
Drea married R. Kelly in 1996 after meeting him while working as his backup dancer. They were married for 13 years and have three children together.
“My heart definitely goes out to the survivors and the courage that it takes to come forward and tell the story, but my heart breaks as a mother because this is now the legacy that my children will have to deal with and their children’s children.
“At the end of the day, you cannot walk away from your blood line.”
The singer was found guilty of all nine counts on Monday and faces up to 100 years in prison.
Drea also considers herself a survivor and is looking ahead to legacy the rapper has left for their children.
Drea added: “I can only speak of my journey as his ex-wife and a survivor and an advocate, but I also support my children in whatever they feel because at the end of the day, that it’s their father, so they have the right to feel whatever they feel.”
R. Kelly is expected to be sentenced next year, on May 4, 2022.
