Meghan and Harry face 'urgent' pressure from Netflix 'demanding content' after Pearl axe

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are facing added pressure to “produce more” content for Netflix in the wake of the doting parent’s financial pressure, a royal commentator has claimed.

In recent weeks the streaming giants confirmed they had axed the animated series, Pearl, which featured the Duchess of Sussex as an executive producer.

The children’s TV show was set to focus on the adventures of a 12-year-old girl who becomes inspired by influential women throughout history.

But now, a royal expert has told the Express that the famous family need to take “urgent” action to produce more content in order to maintain their deal with the platform service.

Royal commentator, Richard Fitzwilliams, told the publication that it was “clear” the royals will face added pressure to “produce more and probably more quickly” for consumers.

One issue the professional raised was the question of the sort of content the couple hope to pitch to Netflix following the drop of their children’s show.

At the time of announcing their deal with the company back in September 2020, Harry and Meghan said they will aim to produce documentaries, docuseries, feature films, scripted shows and children’s programmes, all of which will aim to be “inspirational”.

However, the expert confessed that it is unlikely the streaming service will be looking to invest in content focused around royal affairs.

He explained: “Clearly there will be pressure on Harry and Meghan to produce more and probably more quickly.

“The problem is what? It is unlikely to be linked to royal matters but it is urgent with so drastic a fall in Netflix’s fortunes.”

It comes after a massive decline in subscriber count for the TV giants which fell short of annual predictions for the service.

Last month, Netflix reported that its subscriber figures dropped by 200,000 in the first quarter of 2022, which led to more than $50billion being stripped of its market value when shared dropped by 35%.

The Sussexes’ children’s programme, titled Pearl, was one of several projects dropped by the streaming service in a bid to save money that also led to approximately 25 people losing their jobs across their marketing team.
