Two EastEnders favourites could be killed this week, as Janine Butcher and Linda Carter are involved in a brutal car crash.
After Janine loses control of her car and crashes, she and Linda are taken to hospital with severe injuries – but will they survive?
Since the soap began in 1985, EastEnders has aired some of the most dramatic and heartbreaking moments in TV history.
From wedding day disasters, to shock deaths, brutal murders and unexpected returns, Albert Square has seen it all throughout the decades.
However, many of these moments have also resulted in the tragic death of many beloved soap characters.
As viewers wait to see whether Janine and Linda survive, Daily Star takes a look at EastEnders’ most dramatic moments.
Dirty Den is murdered…twice
‘Dirty Den’ Watts is one of EastEnders’ most notorious characters – from serving wife Angie with divorce papers on Christmas day, to his flings with numerous Walford residents.
However his dastardly ways came back to haunt him in 1988, when the pub owner was forced to turn himself into the police after a criminal gang called The Firm intended to kill him.
The only way he could escape The Firm, was to turn himself in and take the rap for an arson attack that happened a few years before.
He was later remanded in custody in prison at HMP Dickens Hill, but on his way to his trial in 1989, The Firm hijacked the vehicle and kidnapped Den.
Though he managed to escape, he was later shot by an unknown gunman and fell into a canal, leaving viewers presuming that he was dead.
However, everyone on Albert Square was in for the biggest shock of their lives when he walked into the Queen Vic Pub 14 years later.
Viewers had never seen Den’s body, with the dastardly villain explained that the body found in the canal was actually a senior member of The Firm, who was murdered as punishment for Den escaping.
Den had since remarried his new wife Chrissie since fleeing to Spain, but within 18 months of being back on the square, he was up to his old tricks again.
After his ill-fated seduction of Zoe Slater, she, Chrissie and Sam Mitchell attacked Den and left him for dead – putting an end to his reign of terror once and for all.
Tiffany is killed on New Year’s Eve
One of the most heartbreaking and dramatic EastEnders moments involved TV beauty Martine McCutcheon in 1999.
Martine’s character Tiffany Mitchell became an instant fan favourite on the square back in the nineties, especially for her friendship with Bianca.
However her turbulent relationship with Grant Mitchell came to a head when she decided against framing him for pushing her down the stairs – but Grant had other ideas.
After being released from prison, he took their daughter Courtney and as he was leaving, Tiffany chased after them.
In her desperation however, she ran across the road and was instantly killed when she was hit by Frank Butcher’s car on New Year’s Eve.
Tiffany has never been forgotten since that tragic day, with best friend Bianca naming her daughter after her in 2004.
Who shot Phil Mitchell?
The Who Shot Phil Mitchell storyline was one of TV’s biggest who done its, since J.R Ewing’s similar fate in American drama Dallas.
After years of brewing tensions between him and fellow Walford residents including Steve Owen, Lisa Shaw, Mark Fowler, Ian Beale and Dan Sullivan, it all came to a head when Phil was shot on his own doorstep in 2001.
It would be months before the culprit would be caught – with viewers left in shock as Phil’s girlfriend Lisa was revealed as the villain.
Janine pushes Barry off a cliff
Everyone knows that Janine Butcher has a villainous streak to her, but no one could have expected her to push husband Barry off a cliff in 2004.
Barry was head over heels for Janine, but her love was all a front, with the truth finally being revealed during their honeymoon.
After Barry realised that Janine did not love him, he tried to convince her to give them another chance, saying: “You have got a heart.”
However, Janine disagreed and subsequently pushed Barry off a cliff – watching him die after carrying out her despicable act.
Bradley Branning’s deadly roof fall
EastEnders’ first-ever live episode in 2015 to celebrate the soap’s 30th anniversary left viewers on the edge of their seats, with a shock wedding day death.
After forgiving Stacey Slater for sleeping with his dad Max, Bradley Branning married Stacey for a second time during the special episode.
However, their big day was overshadowed by Bradley’s suspected involvement in the death of Archie Mitchell.
Before he and Stacey could escape Albert Square, the police chased Bradley to a rooftop.
Not long after, Bradley slipped and fell to his death in a shocking end to the episode.
Things took an even more dramatic turn, when dad Max dragged Stacey away from Bradley’s body and she sobbed that he “didn’t do it”.
As Bradley’s family looked confused, Stacy confessed: “It was me. I killed Archie.”
Who killed Lucy Beale?
EastEnders loves a good Who Done It storyline, and ten years after the attempted murder of Phil Mitchell, another Walford resident’s time was up.
After her brief relationship with Max Branning, Lucy Beale was murdered – with viewers waiting for over one year to discover who the killer was.
Max Branning was locked up in the meantime after becoming a suspect, but the real killer was soon revealed in a shock twist.
Little Bobby Beale was the quiet, youngest son of long standing Albert Square resident Ian Beale, but no one could have suspected that he was a murderer.
However, a special live episode of the 30th anniversary of the soap revealed that he was actually the killer.
Despite his mum initially covering up for him, Bobby was tried in court and later sent to a young offender’s institute for his crimes, before returning to the square in 2019.
Ronnie and Roxy Mitchell wedding day heartbreak
EastEnders has had its fair share of wedding heartbreak, but Ronnie Mitchell’s wedding to Jack Branning was one of its most devastating.
After tying the knot in a beautiful celebration, husband Jack took their children upstairs to the hotel room and read them a story.
Sisters Ronnie and Roxy Mitchell continued the celebrations by drinking champagne but later decided to take a quick swim in the pool.
Their fun then turned to tragedy after Roxy jumped in and began to drown.
When Ronnie tried to save her, she also began to struggle in the water and sadly died alongside her sibling.
