Waterloo Road praised for dealing with 'real issues' after 'authentic' scene

Waterloo Road fans have praised the show’s actors for portraying “real issues” such as financial struggles and mental health problems.

Kym Marsh’s character Nicky Walters and her kids Tonya and Preston are kicked out of their home before school starts after being evicted.

As Preston tries to find somewhere for his family to stay, going as far as reaching out to his estranged family members, tensions rise resulting in a panic attack, where he admits he “feels like he’s dying.”

Fans of the show took to Twitter to praise the show for their portrayal of “real life issues.”

Credit to #WaterlooRoad and to both Noah Valentine and @Vincent_Jerome_ for their work in that very authentic panic attack scene. The show is at its best when it’s dealing with very real issues like that,” one wrote.

A second added: “This is incredible representation of a panic attack, thank you Waterloo Road @WaterlooRoad #WaterlooRoad.”

“Preston’s panic attack was so accurate and real. As someone who has suffered with panic attacks, that scene felt very relatable for me and noah did it fantastically,” a third tweeted. “Waterloo road is doing a brilliant job at portraying relatable issues to young students like me #waterlooroad.”

Later in the episode, things seemed to be going well for the Walters’ family, when their aunt offered to house them so long as Nicky apologised for remarks made in the past.

Once settled, Preston went off to meet his girlfriend, Samia, but before approaching her, he hid in some hedges, opening his red duffle bag to reveal fizzy drinks and food.

After quickly forcing himself to eat, Preston made himself vomit, revealing an eating disorder to audiences on top of the panic attack he suffered earlier in the episode. Again, fans praised the representation of eating disorders, especially in young men.

“Rare that shows like this do eating disorder storylines involving young male characters. A very interesting and laudable step for the show. #WaterlooRoad,” one said.

Another viewer added: “Really enjoying the Preston and bulimia storyline, they’re building it up slowly and doing a good job with it #WaterlooRoad”
