HBO star has ‘sex scene kit’ with knee pads and tape to ‘make actors into Barbies'

One HBO star has confirmed the answer to one of the biggest mysteries in Hollywood – how simulated sex scenes are achieved on set.

Alicia Rodis, intimacy coordinator at the network, confessed in 2019 that she has a “kit” used to make actors’ genitals “look like Barbie dolls” which includes stick-on thongs and plenty of tape.

Former actress and stuntwoman Alicia made use of a special kit containing Shibues and Hibues – strapless thongs that stick to an actor’s body to ensure their privates stay, well, private.

The thongs for men contain a cup for their bulge, while women’s lie flat, and they come in a variety of different skin tones.

Another key element of a sex scene might be a little more unexpected. Alicia carried knee and elbow pads “in case someone is on a hard floor”, along with wet wipes, breath mints and tissues.

She sat down the major stars before a sex scene and asks them to shave their genital areas – for a very specific reason.

Speaking to The Atlantic, Alicia confirmed: “Usually I’ll talk with actors beforehand and ask, ‘Could you shave your bikini line so we know you’re not going to get a free spa treatment when we take off the Shibue?’”

Ouch.

She explained: “Let’s say we’re coming in to do a sex scene. They’re simulating sex and they’re excluding genitals – we are going to see someone fully naked, but not their genitals — and they’re in the bed, with sheets. So what do we need to make sure?

“We take a Shibue, open it up, and put a silicone guard underneath so everyone becomes like a Barbie doll.”

Alicia also carried baby oil “so they can take anything that’s adhesive off”, along with razors just in case.

Sporting her special kit wasn’t Alicia’s only job, however, as she would also review scrips and sit down with actors to coach them through the intimate scenes before filming kicked off.

It comes after Margot Robbie shared secrets about the film industry, including genital wigs called merkins which are used to hide real pubic hair.

She told the Fitzy & Wippa podcast: “They have things called merkins, which is like a wig but for genitalia.

“I remember on Wolf Of Wall Street there was an entire merkin room, there was a whole room full of merkins.

“I guess people would go in and pick out, you know… I’m not going to go into detail but it was a fascinating, and little-known fact about the film-making industry.”
