Grammy-winning saxophone player Wayne Shorter has sadly died at the age of 89.
Shorter’s publicist Alisse Kingsley confirmed that he sadly passed away at a hospital in Los Angeles, though no cause of death has yet been revealed.
Known as a renowned composer and pioneer of modern jazz, Wayne Shorter was beloved by music fans across the globe.

Taking to Twitter to share their tributes for the jazz legend, one fan wrote: “Rest in Power #WayneShorter Thank you for your music.”
Another echoed: “Wayne Shorter changed my life. This news is heartbreaking.”
While a third posted: “Only Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter are left from Miles Davis’ second great quintet. Rest in peace Wayne Shorter.”

Wayne began his career in the 1960s as a tenor saxophonist, working as an in-house composer for the Miles Davis Quintet and Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers.
Between collaborations with Joni Mitchell, Carlos Santana and Steely Dan, the fusion pioneer made waves with the 1977 track Aja.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, the star was encouraged by his dad to take up clarinet when he was a teen, while his older brother played both alto saxophone and trumpet.

After graduating from New York University, Wayne spent two years in the US Army before being discharged.
A founding member of the jazz group Weather Report, Shorter didn’t retire from his nearly 70-year career due to health issues in 2018, though continued working as a composer.
He was forced to pull out of his San Francisco residency due to ill health.

Wayne’s health was sadly marred by tragedy, with his second daughter sadly passing away when she was a teenager.
His wife and niece were also killed in an aeroplane crash on TWA Flight 800, on their way to visit him overseas.
Speaking in 1996 of the accident, he explained: “When my wife Anna Maria died, what I got from this was moving inside me. I was feeling her, feeling her say, ‘Go on, keep writing, keep playing, go on.'”
