The Oscars took place last night (12 March) and the event hosted some of the biggest names in the film industry.
However, fans were surprised to see two notable faces missing from the star-studded crowd.
Tom Cruise and James Cameron both didn’t show up at the Acadamy Awards this year for their movies Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way Of Water.

Tom’s film Top Gun was up for the Best Picture award and the star had produced and starred in the movie.
Avatar: The Way Of Water was also up for a Best Picture award and James Cameron was noticeably absent.
Tom had a good excuse though, with his representatives confirming that the 60-year-old actor was busy filming Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part II.
However, James’ excuse was slightly more ambiguous as his producing partner and fellow nominee Jon Landau claimed that his absence was due to “personal reasons”
Neither movie won the gong but Top Gun did win an award for Best Sound.
The host of the Oscars Jimmy Kimmel didn’t let it slide that the pair didn’t show up and he commented on it.
He said: “”You know, Tom [Cruise] and James Cameron didn’t show up tonight. The two guys who insisted we go to the theatre didn’t come to the theatre.”
He then made a dig at Tom’s Scientology beliefs: “Everyone loved Top Gun, everyone! I mean, Tom Cruise with his shirt off and that beach football scene? L Ron hubba hubba.”
Jimmy then poked fun at James: “Some of the cynics are saying James Cameron isn’t here because he didn’t get a best director nomination.
“And while I find that very hard to believe about a man of such deep humility, he does have a point. I mean, how does the Academy not nominate the guy who directed Avatar? What do they think he is, a woman?”
Then, sparing a remark for the lengthy runtime of the latest The Way of Water, Kimmel remarked: “You know a show is too long when even James Cameron can’t sit through it.”
