EastEnders fans reckon they’ve worked out what’s going on with Reiss Colwell, after it was revealed that he is hiding something from girlfriend Sonia Fowler.
They discovered that he has a secret wife, as recent scenes showed the character, played by Jonny Freeman, making a phone call and requesting to speak to her.
However an oblivious Sonia (Natalie Cassidy) was completely out of the loop in the next room.

While secret other halves are quite common in soaps, this storyline might not be as straight forward, with some fans believing they’ve figured out exactly what is happening – and it echoes a past plot.

Believing there is an element of sadness to Reiss’ secret identity, one fan said on Reddit: “Rocky may have walked out on his wife, I think Reiss’s circumstances are different.”
They referenced Rocky Cotton (Brian Conley) in their post, whose secret relationship was recently exposed.
However they continued: “I think Reiss’ wife lives in an assisted living facility, while this may be a bit depressing it is a story that to the best of my knowledge EastEnders hasn’t tackled before.”

In response, another fan noted that it could be similar to a past storyline involving ex Albert Square resident Jane Beale (Laurie Brett).
Jane had been married to David Collins, though he suffered from Huntington’s disease and died in 2004.
She then went on to marry Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt), though they later got divorced.
The fan wrote: “Jane Beale had a husband who was in a hospice when she first joined the square, I think his name was David. I’m fairly sure Ian met him too.

“I think you’re right though. It’ll be nice to see him and Sonia have a more serious storyline and cement their relationship.”
Some fans took the thought a step further, and suggested Reiss and his past could have been introduced to explore a Covid-based plot.
They said: “The theory concerns Reiss’ wife being in some kind of living facility but instead of it being Huntington’s disease like Jane’s husband, instead Reiss’ wife is perhaps still recovering from Covid in a similar circumstance that Kate Garraway’s husband Derek is in.

“I thought about it like how Lola’s brain tumour is mirroring the death of Tom Parker, it would be an interesting route to take the story but it just depends on what [executive producer] Chris Clenshaw has planned.”
Soaps never shy away from exploring the hard-hitting, real life subjects, but fans will have to wait and see exactly what bosses have in store for Sonia and Reiss.
