Emma Willis says she and husband Matt had ‘many bad times’ during addiction battle

When Emma Willis settled down to marry Busted sensation Matt in 2008, she was more than aware that he was suffering from drug addiction. But she had no idea how many trials and tribulations they’d have to overcome together.

In the lead-up to their special day, the pop star was battling his needs in rehab, with Emma terrified he wouldn’t make it out in time.

Luckily, he overcame the odds, and with just 72 hours to go, he made it out and dedicated the rest of his days to the love of his life. However, that didn’t mean his battles were over.

Having recently celebrated their fifteenth anniversary, and with three children, the pair are as happy as ever. But the fear of relapse remains a prevalent factor in their lives.

Emma Willis will open up about Matt’s addictions in a new documentary

Emma confessed: “Along with addiction comes a lot of bad times,” shares Emma, 47. “As hard and as bad as that can be and has been, it also is part of who he is and who he is is who I love. We’ve been together for 18 years.”

In a 20-year battle, Matt has attended rehab on four occasions, last falling off the wagon in 2016.

Having managed almost a decade of sobriety, upon hitting the road as part of Busted’s reunion tour, he began to start drinking again, with things quickly escalating.

Unable to fight his urges, Matt started to use cocaine, telling his wife that he was simply in the studio, recording an album.

Matt Willis has done his utmost to remain sober

Thinking they were out of the woods, Emma admits that she failed to notice what was happening right under her nose.

She said: “You kind of kick yourself a bit on reflection because you’re like, how the f*** didn’t I see that? All those key signs that I hadn’t seen for so many years were all coming back.”

At the peak of his problems, Emma recorded Matt’s drinking and used to go looking for him in pubs.

The ex-Big Brother host said: “I used to go to all the local pubs to try to find him, but he always went to the ones I didn’t know about.”

Emma Willis and Matt are still very much in love

Having fought for their marriage through thick and thin, the pair remain deeply in love. And now, their relationship is set to take centre stage in a BBC1 documentary on Wednesday, 17th May, at 9 PM.

Emma says, “It’s hard to watch, obviously, but it’s much easier to watch than it was to live through. He’s come a long way, and I don’t doubt he’ll go even further, I’m very proud.”
