Smash Mouth singer Steve Harwell dies of liver failure aged 56 but ‘legacy will live on’

Smash Mouth singer Steve Harwell has died of liver failure at the age of 56.

It comes just hours after it was revealed the rocker was receiving end of life care and had been given just days to live.

His manager Robert Hayes said on Monday (September 4): “Steve Harwell passed away this morning September 4, 2023, at his home in Boise Idaho. He was surrounded by family and friends and passed peacefully and comfortably.”

Hayes explained that the singer was in the final stages of liver failure and that his “legacy will live on through music”.

He insisted that the musician “loved the fans and loved to perform”.

Robert noted that with Steve, Smash Mouth “has sold over 10 million albums worldwide” and they “topped the charts with two number one hit singles”.

The group also landed “five Top 40 singles, three Hot 100 singles, four Billboard 200 albums and a Grammy nomination”.

Many know Smash Mouth for their iconic hit All Star, which was featured in the Shrek franchise.

Hayes continued: “Steve Harwell was a true American Original. A larger than life character who shot up into the sky like a Roman candle. Steve should be remembered for his unwavering focus and impassioned determination to reach the heights of pop stardom.”

“The fact that he achieved this near-impossible goal with very limited musical experience makes his accomplishments all the more remarkable.”

He added: “His only tools were his irrepressible charm and charisma, his fearlessly reckless ambition, and his king-size cajones. Steve lived a 100% full throttle life. Burning brightly across the universe before burning out.”

Steve retired from the band two years ago and Smash Mouth have been touring with Zach Goode.

Throughout his life, Harwell dealt with alcohol abuse and addition before he died at home with his family.

It has previously been reported as a contributing factor to his health condition.

Back in 2021, Harwell made a statement to TMZ about his decision to retire from the band.

He said that he had “tried so hard to power through his physical and mental issues”.

Steve admitted he wanted to “play in front of [his fans] one last time,” but he “just wasn’t able to”.
