U2’s ‘groundbreaking’ Vegas show ‘making millions’ – and it almost didn’t happen

Venues across the world must be trembling after witnessing the incredible opening of U2 ’s Las Vegas residency at the new MSG Sphere venue.

The dome-shaped centre has groundbreaking immersive tech and not only looks incredible on the outside but inside it transports the audience into vast new worlds. The LED lights make it seem like the ceiling is pulsating with the music, even falling on the crowd.

And the backdrop switches dizzyingly from desert or the Vegas strip to soaring through the sky. On stage, U2 focused on their Achtung Baby LP – but in future the setlists will be broken up with favourites from different U2 albums.

Paul McCartney attended the show and Bono said on stage: “The Macca is in our presence. It’s like Mozart is in our presence.” But the incredible performance almost didn’t happen.

The venue has a whopping 167,000 loudspeakers built in and the 16k LED screen is an absolute showstopper. But U2’s creative director for almost four decades, Willie Williams, admitted he initially thought the idea was “terrible”.

The idea of the group opening the Sphere was initially presented to them two years ago and Willie had no interest, believing it felt like the opposite of anything he’d done with U2 since he started with them in 1983.

The show was announced in April this year as they revealed the gig would be kicking off in September and continuing through to the first week of October. As audiences flooded in to see the band to open up the series, they took to X to share their thoughts.

One user wrote: “U2 opened the $2.3 billion Las Vegas Sphere last night and the visuals are incredible.” Another added: “Unbelievable night in Las Vegas!

“U2 took us to new heights inside a stunning spherical musical arena. The music, the magic, the memories – all in one unforgettable sphere!”

A third said: “The Opening U2 Concert at the Sphere in Las Vegas. This is next level!” Meanwhile, as U2 make their mark on the brand new Sphere, Adele is just down the road at her residency at Caesars Palace – it’s a great time to be in Vegas.
