Actor Andre Braugher has died at the age of 61 after a brief illness, his agent has confirmed.
The award-winning actor was known for roles including as Captain Ray Holt on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and Detective Frank Pembleton on Homicide. He won an Emmy for his role in Homicide.
He also had roles in the likes of Kojak and Men Of A Certain Age. It is believed he had recently been cast as the male lead in a new Netflix murder mystery set at the White House, too.

However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, production on the drama, The Residence, was put on hold during the recent actors strike across Hollywood. The series comes from Shonda Rhimes’ production company Shondaland.
It was believed that production would resume on January 2, 2024. Andre was starring alongside the likes of Orange Is The New Black’s Uzo Aduba, and This Is Us star Susan Kelechi Watson.
Andre’s first film role came in the 1989 flick Glory, a historical war drama which also starred Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman. He would then move on to television, with Homicide: Life On The Street.
While his acting talent brought many nods at award ceremonies, he was also voted as one of People’s 50 Most Beautiful People In The World in 1997. Other awards including a handful of Primetime Emmy Awards, Critics’ Choice Television Awards and NAACP Image Awards.
Andre’s acting credits were impressive, working constantly from 1989 until his death. Recently, Homicide producer Tom Fontana spoke very highly of him.
He told BBC News: “I had never seen an actor like that on television. His rhythms were so unique to him.”
He is survived by his wife Amy Brabson, also an actor, and his three sons.
