Horror film about vaginas so raunchy neighbours sure director was ‘shooting porn’

One horror movie dating back to 2007 featured scenes so graphic neighbours figured the director was instead shooting a pornographic film.

That movie is Teeth – directed by Mitchell Lichtenstein. It follows innocent high school student Dawn, who has been busy preaching about purity and abstinence to younger kids. Later, she’s subjected to horrific violence from a guy she trusted – but her vagina “bites back” before he gets the chance to hurt her.

Dawn was born with ‘vagina dentata’, a popular myth in which a woman’s vagina grows teeth of its own. It implies sex will cause injury and emasculation for any male involved in it, and is used as a cautionary tale against rape in certain parts of the world.

The film features plenty of gross scenes, including would-be rapist Tobey’s penis being bitten off by Dawn’s vagina. Later in the movie, she attends a gynaecologist appointment only for the doctor to refuse to wear gloves – and her privates go to bite his fingers.

According to IMDb trivia for the movie, filming the movie took guts, as protests arose from neighbours who figured Lichtenstein was shooting porn instead of a future Hollywood blockbuster. And for Mitchell, it was difficult enough just to get funding for his passion project.

He told FilmBuffOnline at the time: “One thing you find out often with scripts, is that they lay in limbo as people kind of decide whether they might or might not be interested. With this one, they were either instantly not interested or very interested.”

The director went on to say: “I thought [the vagina dentata myth] said something about certain fears men have about women on certain levels and I thought that because of the pervasiveness of it, it would be fruitful to investigate.

“It’s a horror movie, it’s a dark comedy, it’s a coming-of-age film. I was just trying to tell the story in what was the most entertaining and interesting way to tell it without worrying about how it would ultimately be categorised.”

Speaking at the Sundance Film Festival, Mitchell confessed they had to record some “pretty cringe-inducing sounds” to portray the vagina’s teeth without actually showing anything down there. He added: “There was this great location outside of Austin, Texas, which is really what sold me on shooting down there, called Hamilton Pool.

“It’s basically a big sink hole and the cliff above has a big overhang with real dental stalagmites, and it seemed so perfect as a way to show without showing this vagina dentata in nature, because that thing is formed by nature, it’s a cave, it’s a toothed lip.”
