Now the Good Morning Britain presenter has spoken about the high cost of caring for a loved one after revealing the huge price she’s set to pay. She told The Times: “It’s supposed to be a system that’s meant to catch you if you fall,” but it feels like it’s trying to catch you out.
“You feel like you’re answering questions about things that will literally mean life or death to someone you love.” She added: “Derek’s needs were clearly so great, yet he didn’t warrant funded care so you think, ‘If he isn’t getting it, then who is?”
The Times reported that Kate was estimating between £500,000 and £800,000 of debt to pay for Derek’s care.
Kate’s confession comes before her new documentary, Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story, which will be shown on ITV and ITVX on Tuesday, 26 March. Kate Garraway, who has previously shared her husband Derek’s health battles in two documentaries – Finding Derek and Caring For Derek, is now set to share his final journey.
Chatting with her Good Morning Britain co-host Ed Balls, Kate spoke about the upcoming documentary. She admitted she still “can’t quite believe” that Derek isn’t here anymore and can’t watch his own story unfold.”
It’s been pretty emotional, actually,” Kate confessed to Ed, OK! reported. “It makes me want to jump in the screen and give him a hug.
“She went on to say: “You can’t quite believe that he’s not with us to watch his story, but hopefully it will be very useful for others that are going through the same thing. That’s the dream and the wish.
“The TV star also shared a touching conversation she had with Derek. She asked him what his “main message” would be to people watching at home. His response was truly heartbreaking.”
And he said, ‘Never give up fighting for what you believe in and for the people you love’. His words and speech were so limited and there were so many things he wanted to say about the struggle we were all having as a family,” she revealed.
