BBC Breakfast’s Nina Warhurst can’t speak as she marvels at guest’s 4-inch sausage

BBC Breakfast’s Nina Warhurst had to get Charlie Stayt to take over after chowing down on a guest’s sausage.

The BBC duo welcomed butcher Gavin Reynolds on the show to talk about his new Guinness World Record for making the most sausages within one minute.

He said: “I did 83 sausages in one minute, I had to fill them and link them within one minute.” The previous record had been 78.

Gavin said: “I’ve had over 30 years of training to be fair, I had a little practice to see if I could beat it or not. I found out a little while ago there was a Guinness World Record out there and I thought, I think I can beat that.”

And they couldn’t just be little chipolatas or whopping frankfurters, either. He explained: “They all had to be within four-inches long.”

The butcher, whose dad and grandfather were also in the business, reckons he’s made 1.5million sausages in his career. And he’s won other awards too, like a gold star for one of his creations.

Nina said: “What’s lovely, to watch in an age of automation where things just come off conveyer belts, that is a technique that has presumably been used for generations. It’s in your family, in your blood.”

Gavin explained that the Lincolnshire sausage – shoulder and belly pork with seasonings – was his best seller. But he didn’t shy away from less traditional recipes.

“The other week I made a jalapeño and smoked cheddar sausage, that was nice,” he said. “I do a breakfast sausage as well, which has got bacon, mushrooms, onion in it.”

Nina couldn’t help having a bite of one of the Lincolnshire sausages Gavin had brought in – even though she wasn’t too pleased he hadn’t brought her any brown sauce. “Delicious, can confirm,” she said.

But as the segment came to a close, she covered her mouth and passed over to Charlie. “I’ll let you do this bit,” she said.

Letting Charlie take over, Nina laughed: “There’s a bit stuck in my teeth!”
