MAFS expert Mel Schilling admits ‘it’s getting tough’ as she issues sad health update

Mel Schilling has updated her loyal legion of fans with another health update as she continues to battle cancer.

The Married At First Sight relationship expert opened up about the challenges of going through chemotherapy and how she is tackling the crippling side effects. The therapist announced she had been diagnosed with the disease back in December and has since underdone surgery and chemo.

Speaking to The Mirror on Monday (June 27), she confessed that her battle has started “getting tough” five months into her journey. The 52-year-old told the publication: “It’s getting tough now. I’m about halfway through and it’s getting hard.

“Feeling fatigued and nauseous is a bigger part of my everyday life. It feels like I’m hungover or pregnant every day, which is not fun. I don’t do things by halves. It’s been a tricky time as I’ve been adjusting to going through that and moving house.”

The blonde bombshell explained that she’s been undergoing treatment during her tiring move over to the UK with her husband Gareth and their eight-year-old daughter, Maddie. Mel, who is an ambassador for the colorectal charity Occtopus, recently spoke to UK’s Magic FM about her health.

She told them: “I’m feeling a little flat today actually, to be totally honest with you.” The expert added that she is now on her third cycle of chemotherapy. Mel went on: “It sort of feels like being hungover, like I’ve been drinking all night.”

Despite her ongoing health battle, the TV personality shared her determination to keep working and has no intention of slowing down. She went on: “I’m just now trying to find the way to juggle everything, because I’m not stopping working.

“This thing is not beating me, I’m here to fight, I just need to make some adaptations.” It comes after the doting mum discussed the agony she experienced before she received her cancer diagnosis.

Speaking to New! magazine, Mel explained the severe pain she was in while at work. She explained: “I was doubled over and shouting – the pain was so intense.”

At the time, doctors originally thought her symptoms were simply a case of severe constipation. But they soon became concerned when she lost her appetite.

During a trip to Ireland with her husband, Mel said she was in “so much pain” she struggled to keep down food or water. Knowing something was still wrong, she went on to see a gastroenterologist after returning to London who was “concerned” about her unexplained weight loss.

Mel later had a CT scan and returned a few days later to get her results, when doctors informed her she had cancer. Recalling the heart-breaking moment, she said: “We were sitting in his office and the doctor had a blank look and I thought, ‘This doesn’t seem right’, and he said, ‘It’s cancer’.

“I think I was numb, I didn’t process it and I went into work mode, that’s all I could focus on.” The This Morning host revealed her shock health battle in December and underwent colon surgery just before the end of the year.

She explained that her tumour – which she has named ‘Terry’ – was removed by UK doctors. But as the cancer spread through her colon into the muscle, Mel discovered she needed chemotherapy and began treatment at the end of February.
