Perrie Edwards’ hidden health battle – house fire, ‘tampons in nose’ to refusing treatment

Little Mix’s Perrie Edwards has opened up about her rare condition which once put her in serious danger.

The pop sensation was diagnosed with congenital anosmia, having no sense of smell, after a fire broke out in her family home and she failed to notice the stench of smoke.

Perrie, 31, shared the turbulent tale: “I couldn’t smell it. Our kitchen had set on fire. I saw the black smoke come under the door. And then I started coughing because it takes your breath away.”

Despite undergoing surgery to correct the condition, which affects around 1 in 10,000 people, the improvement was short-lived. Perrie recalled the moment she thought her sense of smell had returned: “I had surgery, came out, had big tampons in my nose, recovered for a while.

“And then I swear to God I could smell coffee. I woke up and smelled the coffee.”

But the sensation vanished, and despite doctors’ advice for a repeat procedure, Perrie chose not to undergo it again, saying: “I was like, I’m not going through that again. I don’t care. If I had it and lost it, fair enough. But I’ve never had it, so why care?”

The Little Mix star spilled the beans on her foodie love affair despite lacking a sense of smell. Chatting on The Dish From Waitrose podcast, she confessed: “I’ll be like, I’m eating healthy, nobody talk to me, and then I’m like, Five Guys, what’s going on? I literally, I’m a foodie and I do try to eat healthy.”

The pop sensation also dished details about her YouTube series Eat In With Little Mix, which was a hit among fans, much like their chart-topping tunes such as Black Magic and Shout Out to My Ex.

Little Mix, who soared to stardom after clinching victory on The X Factor in 2011, decided to press pause on their whirlwind journey in 2021. Perrie opened up about the decision, saying they “put their foot down” and it wasn’t a sudden urge to go solo but more of a gradual realisation.

She elaborated: “I don’t think it was like an overnight ‘I’m gonna go solo now’, because I never knew what I would do in my future.”

Reflecting on the bond with her bandmates Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Jade Thirlwall, she added: “I just knew that Little Mix had me tired. We love each other and we’re so supportive of each other and we just want to see each other win.”
