Oasis member says leaving band was ‘biggest mistake’ and ‘doesn’t know’ if he’ll join reunion

An Oasis member is dreaming of returning to the group for its long-anticipated reunion tour – but isn’t sure if he’ll get the call-up.

Tony McCaroll, the band’s original drummer, admitted leaving Oasis in 1995 was one of his ‘biggest mistakes’ as he opened up about Liam and Noel Gallagher’s relationship. It comes after fans around the world were sent into hysteria when the brothers confirmed earlier this week they would return to the stage together for the first time in 15 years.

Noel and Liam will put aside their differences and perform together in the summer of 2025 with a jam-packed schedule across Edinburgh, Cardiff, London, Dublin and Manchester. But not all band members could make the tour, with McCaroll, 53, saying he isn’t sure whether he’ll be there.

McCaroll told The Sun he isn’t surprised the high-profile duo are reuniting. “It’s not like they’re two estranged friends, if you like, they’re brothers,” McCaroll told The Sun.

“I don’t know if I’m going to be asked, if there’s a whole thing going on that I don’t know about.” Whether McCaroll joins the brothers on stage is still uncertain, but he did reveal he would “love” to join them next year.

The drummer also revealed details of why he left the band, which saw him replaced by Alan “Whitey” White.

In a separate interview following the unveiling of a blue plaque in McCaroll’s honour in Co Offaly, Ireland, the drummer said the band was a “tough place to be sometimes.” He recalled an occasion where he was told off by Noel after getting into a drunken row with someone after a gig. “I’d had enough. I’d had enough of the poking each other and this, that and the other, so I swept the kit out the way and went up to Noel – right up to his face – and said: ‘Don’t you ever talk to me like that.’

“It was probably the biggest mistake of life.”

The Gallagher brothers have been under constant pressure from fans to reunite since their split, a result of a backstage brawl at the Rock en Seine festival in Paris in 2009. Noel left the band on August 28 of that year, stating he “simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.”

The brothers have now been publicly feuding for over a decade but on Tuesday (August 27), it was confirmed the band’s bitter split had come to an end, with the announcement that “the great wait is over” for reunion dates.

The band revealed that Oasis Live 25 would be a global tour, with shows outside Europe to be confirmed at a later date.
