Dawson’s Creek star dies aged 51 as sister says ‘he’s finally at peace’ in poignant tribute

Dawson’s Creek star Obi Ndefo has sadly died aged 51, his sister has announced. The actor was best known for playing Bodie Wells in the hit US show alongside James Van Der Beek, Joshua Jackson and Katie Holmes.

Obi’s sister Nkem Ndefo said: “Heartbroken at the loss of my younger brother and knowing he’s finally at peace.” Obi’s cause of death is currently unknown. It comes after the star lost both of his legs when he was hit by a car in an August 2019 incident.

The star first shot to fame in 1995, appearing in an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. He later featured in The Jamie Foxx Show, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Crossing Jordan, The West Wing and Stargate SG-1. His final role saw him appear in an episode of NCIS: Los Angeles in 2021.

In Dawson’s Creek, Obi played recurring character Bodie. He also struck up a relationship with Bessie Potter (Nina Repeta). The TV couple settled in Capeside and eventually welcomed a son, Alexander.

Fellow co-stars have since paid tribute to the actor, with Mary-Margaret Humes – who played his mum, Gale Leery, on the show – writing on Instagram: “These words don’t come easy. It’s hard for me to conceive that you have left us, my dear friend. You always were and always will be a bright shining light.

“What an example of pure unfiltered love and tenacity you set as you faced life’s challenges of recent. I will cherish all of our messages of love and support to each other over the past few years. Rest in peace sweet warrior.”

In 2019, Obi spoke to the LA Times about losing his legs. The actor had visited a grocery shop after teaching a yoga class and was loading shopping into his car when a speeding SUV crashed into him. “This is just so horrendous what happened to me, why would I compound this by feeling bad about it?” he said.

“I couldn’t live in this world without becoming sort of like an Olympic athlete of certain things, you know — of kindness and of health — because there is no other choice for me,” he said. “So there’s a sort of rigor to me, and I think, ‘OK my legs are severed. I don’t know how to do this, but I know how to do this.”
