Horror fans are taking part in a bizarre challenge to watch Smile 2.
The first seven minutes of the film are available to watch online for free, but eager viewers have to literally smile for the entire time. The sequel was released in cinemas on 18 October, but Paramount is allowing home audiences to watch the horror as long as they take part in the strange task.
Fans can truly immerse themselves in the world of Smile by switching on their cameras and grinning to gain access to the opening scenes of the 2024 horror. If their smile drops at any point, responsive technology pauses the clip.

Film fans on X/Twitter gathered to share their thoughts on the unconventional method. One person joked: “I really don’t care if Paramount steals my identity, it was worth it for watching [seven] minutes of Smile 2 [praying hands],” although there has been no suggestion that this is the case.
Another person wrote: “Me smiling at the FBI agent watching through my webcam lens,” and posted a gif of Squid Game’s Seong Gi-hun grinning at a camera. Someone else sarcastically suggested that horror fans interested in watching the sequel should “aim the camera” at a picture of The Joker from Batman.
One X/Twitter user simply said: “I’m good,” while one impressed horror fan chimed in: “I love it when movies have fun with marketing.” A third person also passed on the challenge: “I saw this yesterday in the theatre. I love the twist of this affecting a huge megastar. I liked the sequel better than the original…and that ending…WHOA! Part three is gonna be NUTS!!”
A sceptical moviegoer responded: “What in the Black Mirror is this,” as a second wrote: “Their marketing team deserves a raise,” while a third added: “This is the hardest thing to the, EVER! #Smile2 my teeth got [sore] lol.”
Smile 2 is a psychological horror film starring Naomi Scott as a pop star. She starts to realise some creepy goings-on after a disturbing chain of events conveniently occur just before she is due to head on tour.
