John Lewis Christmas advert enrages the nation as they fume ‘one thing missing’

John Lewis’ 2024 Christmas advert has sent shockwaves across the nation.

The retailer recently released their annual festive advertisement and have been slammed for “missing out” something many viewers deem vital. Social media users gathered online to point out that the clip involved no male actors whatsoever.

JL’s Xmas ad featured a story about a woman searching through the festive season for the perfect gift to give to her sister on the big day, which has caused quite the controversy among many unhappy viewers.

Over on X/Twitter, many people pointed out that something was missing from the Christmas advert. One person expressed their thoughts and tweeted: “Why are there no men in John Lewis ad?”

Someone else wrote: “Just watched the John Lewis Christmas ad…no sure what to make of it tbh, there’s no men in it, (much like the Boots ad), its a bit weird, not very Christmassy… and it’s certainly not a tearjerker!”

Another tweet was issued in the retailer’s defence: “Because famously, men have always been underrepresented in adverts. How dare John Lewis make an ad about two sisters,” while someone else urged critics to “get a grip”.

Elsewhere, viewers were simply “disappointed” with the advert, which has become a cultural phenomenon in recent years as excited Brits wait for the John Lewis advert to signal the start of the festive season.

One person branded it “f***ing s***,” while someone else pointed out: “This ad breaks a fundemental rule, don’t have dialogue over a song that has singing in it.” Others called it “terrible” while someone else urged John Lewis to “simply donate the money they spend on adverts to charity”.

A scathing message read: “[Might] be just me, but that felt like 2 minutes of absolutely nothing. Think John Lewis have lost the sauce because they haven’t had a proper good Christmas ad in 5 years now. I think any magic was lost as soon as they showed an actual John Lewis store.”
