Capital’s Jingle Bell Ball opened with a heart-warming tribute to Liam Payne.
The annual event held at The O2 London began with a nod to the One Direction singer, who sadly died on 16 October after falling from a third floor balcony while on holiday in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The world was rocked by the sudden news and tributes were shared around the globe.

On Saturday [7 December], Capital started the Jingle Bell Ball by projecting an image of Liam onto the stage’s screens. A five word tribute read: “Tonight we remember Liam Payne 1993-2024.”
After reading the touching message, The O2 erupted with applause and some members of the audience stood up to pay their respects. One concert-goer said: “It was lovely to see everyone take a moment to remember Liam.
In the JBB programme for the evening, Capital included a picture of the singer accompanied by a message: “This year we lost One Direction star Liam Payne, who was much loved by the Capital family.”

The tribute touched upon his time in the band, his X Factor journey and Payne’s past contributions to Capital events. He previously performed at JBB in 2011, 2012 and 2019, Capital’s Summertime Ball in 2015 and Capital Up Close in 2020.

“He was a regular visitor to the Global studios and was always kind and funny, making everyone feel at ease and chatting away happily to everyone he met,” they wrote before signing off with: “We are sending all the love to his family, friends and fans. Rest in peace Liam x”
On X/Twitter, Liam’s fans tweeted about the event. One person said: “I wish he was there performing tonight, not on stage a tribute but him :(“
Another person added: “Thank you @CapitalOfficial what a lovely tribute to our beautiful boy who we miss so much [heart emoji].” Others called the message a “beautiful tribute,” that it was a “well said” nod to the singer and a “lovely” thing to do.
