The Chase star Anne Hegerty has opened up about the pay structure on The Chase, revealing that she and her fellow chasers can’t rely on a steady salary from the show
The Chase sensation Anne Hegerty, known as the Governess on screen, has spilled the beans about the surprising payday on the hit ITV quiz show.
The quiz whizz, 66, is now estimated to be worth £3.2 million from her roaring success on the programme, has revelead that none of the chasers get a fixed salary.
Chatting to the Mirror at the star-studded TV Choice Awards on Monday, Anne also admitted that she does not want another brainiac joining the squad anytime soon.
When quizzed on the likelihood of a fresh face popping up as a chaser, she replied: “Well we do always hope not.”
She explained: “We are paid per show, so we’re not on a salary. It’s not as if they’re going to up the budget and add a new salary, a new chaser would just mean the same number of shows shared between more people – so less money for everyone. So, hope not! “.
Despite the dent a new chaser might make on her earnings, Anne had no hard feelings when Darragh Ennis came aboard in 2020, a whole decade after her debut. She siad: “You know, Darragh has been a very good new addition, he’s very popular, and that’s worthwhile.”
The “I’m a Celebrity” star also opened up about the dynamics between the chasers. She confirmed that despite their competitive edge, they actually get along quite well and spend time together when possible.
She said: “We know each other, and certainly on Beat the Chasers we tend to hang out a lot, because we’re all there at the same time.”
Despite not drawing a regular salary from The Chase, Anne’s company Frosty Knickers Ltd showed healthy financials from August 2023 with over £807,000 in the bank.
Speaking about her spending habits, she previously said was once on benefits and so is not much of a spender. Anne said: “I’m half Scottish. We don’t spend money and, being a fat person, I can only buy from certain places. I like my money sitting in my bank and representing a bit of security. I don’t see the point in sloshing money around. I’m not frugal, I’d actually say I’m mean.”
She does indulge herself though; splitting her time between pads in Manchester and Watford for TV gigs, flying first class or business for holidays, and revelling in ‘Club Med’ luxury when heading overseas for quiz action.
