Fans have been shocked and disturbed by Woe’s Hollow
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Severance season 2
Fans of the show Severance were left stunned after Helly R (portrayed by Britt Lower) was revealed as her Outie alter-ego Helena Eagan in last week’s episode, Woe’s Hollow. This came after much speculation about who had returned to the Severed floor following the OTC breach in the season one finale.
Now, questions are swirling about who will be sent back and whether the MDR team can ever trust Helly again if she does return. Additionally, Apple TV+ viewers are curious about the future of the budding romance between Mark S (Adam Scott) and Helly, especially after Helena tricked Mark into sleeping with her, reports the Express.
Audiences will have to keep watching to see if Helly returns and whether their relationship has been ruined by Helena. Regardless, it seems that Mark S has found himself in a complicated love triangle with Helly and Helena.
It appears that Helena developed a sexual interest in Mark after repeatedly watching the passionate kiss between him and Helly. Some fans have taken to Reddit to discuss this development, noting some foreshadowing from earlier in the season when Milchick (Trammell Tillman) mentioned to Mark that Ms Cobel (Patricia Arquette) had become fixated on him and wanted to form a throuple with his Innie and Outie.
One Redditor asked: “Does anyone else feel like Helena is potentially going to develop feelings for Mark also?” Another user agreed, stating: “Yea this is what I’ve been saying. Milchick mentioning the throuple was foreshadowing Mark/Helly/Helena [sic].”
“It wouldn’t surprise me if Helena feels very trapped and maybe insecure but she has to hide it in order to be the face of Lumen. She also seems like she’s kind of at the whims of the company and her father. Seeing her innie rebel, be confident, find love, and make a stand against the company is probably something she’s always wanted [sic],” one viewer expressed. Another fan speculated: “I think Helena already has feelings for Mark, she just doesn’t know it yet. If you can carry the hurt with you, like Petey said, you could also carry the love.”
The show’s handling of consent issues, particularly in the sex scene between Mark S and Helena, sparked debate among viewers.
One commented: “That’s one of the many great questions that the show will have to answer if the show is serious about displaying real moral dilemmas about this chip technology. As they say IRL, with every new technology comes new crimes along with it. I would personally say, yes, Mark never gave consent to Helena, so therefore it’s a sex crime [sic].”
Another viewer added: “Yes there were many issues of consent. We don’t know if outie Mark would consent to his innie having sex with anyone. So that’s unclear. But innie Mark thought it was Helly when it was not, which is rape by deception. I’m unsure if Helly was raped because she shares a body with Helena and Helly would probably want to have sex with innie Mark, but we can’t know for sure [sic].”
One viewer compared the controversial scene to a deceptive twin scenario, saying: “I see it much like twins in this instance. Say you were dating one twin, then one day the other comes by and seduces you under the guise of them being your partner. That’s a clear case of rape in my opinion. Good question, and I was asking myself the same during that scene.”
Meanwhile, ‘Severance’ creator Dan Erickson delved into the murky waters of consent issues presented in Woe’s Hollow, admitting it was a deliberate choice by the writers. He revealed to TVLine: “Mark thought he was with one person when he was actually sort of with a different person. And then for Helly, it’s a very troubling thing to know that something like that happened without you mentally being there.”
Erickson emphasized the importance of not dodging the topic of bodily autonomy.
As ‘Severance’ season two unfolds, viewers will witness the aftermath of these events, affecting both the characters’ Innies and Outies.
