The Santa Fe Police Department has confirmed that a press conference will be held today after the mysterious death of Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arawaka
Police have slated a press conference for today following the death of silver screen legend Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arawaka, who were tragically found dead at their Santa Fe home in New Mexico.
Shrouded in mystery, cops are probing the couple’s death after a handyman saw one of the bodies through a window while there for maintenance. The shock led to a 911 call with officials rushing to the scene.
It was at the couple’s home where they stumbled upon two “mummified” bodies, alongside the remains of a dog nearby. They found a pair of living dogs at the house – one roaming inside and another in the garden.
The police’s investigation is driven by a number of questions at the scene including an “unsecured and opened door, (how) deputies observed a healthy dog running loose on the property, another healthy dog near the deceased female, a deceased dog laying 10-15 feet from the deceased female in a closet of the bathroom, the heater being moved, the pill bottle being opened and pills scattered next to the female, the male decedent being located in a separate room of the residence, and no obvious signs of a gas leak”.
A first look by the coroner indicated no “external trauma” with carbon monoxide and toxicology screens still pending, reports the Mirror.
In an early hours announcement on Thursday, February 27, 2025, the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office revealed that both Hackman and Arakawa had been transported to the Medical Investigator’s office for autopsies. They stated: “In the early hours of Thursday, February 27 2025, Hackman and Arakawa were transported to the Office of the Medical Investigator. An autopsy was performed. Initial findings noted no external trauma to either individual. Carbon monoxide and toxicology tests were requested for both individuals. The manner and cause of death has not been determined. The official results of the autopsy and toxicology reports are pending. This remains an open investigation.”
Gene’s bereft family – daughters Elizabeth and Leslie, alongside granddaughter Annie – made a heartfelt statement: Speaking to pay tribute to Gene and Betsy, they said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy. He was loved and admired by millions around the world for his brilliant acting career, but to us he was always just Dad and Grandpa. We will miss him sorely and are devastated by the loss.”
The air of mystery remains as the Santa Fe County Sheriff in New Mexico confirmed an ongoing “active investigation” into the couple’s sudden demise, stating: “We can confirm that both Gene Hackman and his wife were found deceased Wednesday afternoon at their residence on Sunset Trail. This is an active investigation – however, at this time we do not believe that foul play was a factor.”
The Santa Fe Police Department has now confirmed that they will be holding a press conference at 3pm local time on Friday, February 28th. For those in the UK, this will be at 10pm, and it will take place at the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office.
