Elton said: “Having children changed everything about my life. I’ve learned that the simplest things in life, like having a minute with them, are worth more than any painting, any photograph, any house or any hit record.”

He explained that before the couple had any children they “just had their lives” and they would “spend money because they didn’t have anything else to focus on”.

“We have really toned things down because we have enough stuff. There is nothing else we need. Of course, I want to leave my boys in a very sound financial state, but it’s terrible to give kids a silver spoon.”

The Candle in the Wind singer said that kind of treatment can “ruin their life” before adding: “Listen, the boys live the most incredible lives. They’re not normal kid and I’m not pretending they are.”

Elton said that he wants “some semblance of normality and some respect for money and work.” The star explained that he “comes from a very working-class family and was born in a council estate house,” later earning everything he has from “hard work” which “is the way [his sons] have got to do it as well”.

The singer revealed that the brothers have chores, help out in the kitchen, tidy their own rooms and assisting in the garden. Once completed, the children “get a little star to put on these charts they’ve made”.

Elton and David’s son Zackary Jackson Levon Furnish-John was born via surrogacy on 25 December 2010, while Elijah Joseph Daniel Furnish-John was born on 11 January 2013 by the same surrogate.

As well as his two sons, Elton has a whopping ten godchildren. These include John Lennon’s son Sean, David and Victoria Beckham’s sons Brooklyn and Romeo, Elizabeth Hurley’s son Damian and Seymour Stein’s daughter.
