Coachella festival kicked off in style yesterday, with thousands of influencers, A-listers and ticket holders entering the desert for two weekends of performances. Renowned for its star-studded lineup and eccentric fashion statements, one festival attendee suggested the event is not all its cracked up to be.

From grim toilets to overpriced, bland food – one social media star revealed the behind-the-scenes issues so few get to see. TikTok enthusiast and seasoned Coachella guest Katherine Hayes, known as @softketchup online, shared insider info she wishes someone had told her before her first time at the event.

In a video, she told her followers: “The grass is flying everywhere. If you’re someone that gets seasonal allergies take a Zyrtec, bring your allergy eye drops…be prepared. I was not prepared the first time I went and I was struggling.”

Coachella is expected to attract around 125,000 attendees

On top of battling allergies, Katherine stressed the importance of prioritising fashion over practicality, adding: “your feet and body will thank you,” reports the Mirror.

Next, she warned her followers that “the food is mid” and that they’d be “you’re eating purely for fuel not a culinary experience”. She elaborated: “You’re going to have so many food trucks and booths and stands and they’re going to look so good and you’re going to be tempted to get some asian fusion lobster burger for $40, but don’t do it. It’s not going to be good I promise you.”

Katherine also touched upon the warm days and freezing nights, cautioning that a mini skirt alone would leave them “miserable”. She urged festival-goers to buy warm merchandise “as soon as you can”, ideally on day one, to avoid the weekend queues.

She also recommended packing painkillers to combat any sun or booze-induced headaches.

The TikToker added another tip: “If there’s toilet paper in the portia potty take some extra to put in your pocket”. According to Katherine, loo roll is a rare find and if spotted, it’ll be “gone in the next hour,” and advised stocking up or bringing tissues.

She also suggested bringing hand sanitiser as the ones in the toilets are “always empty” and the “handwashing stations are also always empty”.

Finally, she encouraged an open mind towards lesser-known artists, advising against only showing up for the evening ‘big names’. “Go in early, get your money’s worth, go to a few sets, and see if you can discover a new artist you like.”

Other Coachella veterans shared their thoughts in the comment section. One TikTok user said: “BIG on the seeing smaller artists! People who enter the festival at 8pm… I will never understand.”

Another festival-goer added: “Highly recommend getting a locker to hold your stuff for the whole weekend. Keep a change of clothes in there just in case.” Meanwhile, a third suggested: “Bring a bandana or scarf because DUST will be your entire weekend.”
