The Cure’s Perry Bamonte dies after battling ‘illness throughout Christmas’

The Cure legend Perry Bamonte has died.

Bamonte, who was best known as The Cure’s guitarist and keyboard player, has sadly passed away at the age of 65.

The news was posted to the band’s website on 26 December and the statement confirmed that Perry, who was described as a “great friend and bandmate”, had died “after a short illness at home over Christmas”.

The tribute said: “Quiet, intense, intuitive, constant and hugely creative, ‘Teddy’ was a warm hearted and vital part of The Cure story. Our thoughts and condolences are with all his family. He will be very greatly missed.”

Fans on social media were heartbroken by the devastating news and rushed to X/Twitter to share their messages and memories.

One person said: “Sad news RIP,” another wrote: “The day weighs heavy,” and a third added: “Rest in peace Perry.” Someone else said the news was “desperately sad,” while another tweet read: “Terrible news, how awful.”

The rocker was born on 3 September 1960 and began playing with The Cure in 1984 after his brother Daryl started working as their tour manager. He went on to take on the role of frontman Robert Smith’s guitar technician and personal assistant.

Perry had previously left the band and officially rejoined back in 2022

Perry appeared on a number of albums from 1992 to 2000s before he left in 2005 and joined Love Amongst Ruin seven years later. He reconnected with The Cure back in 2019 when they were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and officially rejoined in 2022.

The guitarist was set to play a number of upcoming gigs throughout the UK and Europe in 2026 including festival sets at Isle Of Wight Festival, Primavera Sound Barcelona, Rock Werchter, Open’er, Øya and Rock En Seine.
