‘Our Towns’ Review: Across America, Signs of Life

In this companion piece to the book of the same title, James and Deborah Fallows search for revitalization in American cities that had fallen on hard times. The documentary “Our Towns” serves as a companion piece to the 2018 book of the same title, in which the authors, James and Deborah Fallows, chronicled their travels across the country in a single-engine airplane as they spent time in places they felt the national news media narrative had missed. One ground rule, James says in the film, was to “never ask about national politics, because that conversation goes nowhere.”The movie, directed by Steven Ascher and Jeanne Jordan, confounds easy distinctions between urban and rural settings and red and blue states. Even what counts as progress isn’t straightforward. (In this telling, Sioux Falls, S.D., owes some of its revitalization to the state’s elimination of a ceiling on credit card interest rates.) The film trails the Fallowses as they return to some of the cities from their book, gauging civic health through libraries, local newspapers, growing art scenes and proliferating breweries. There are regional variations. Students in Columbus, Miss., grapple with the legacy of slavery all around them while adults look to a future there less marred by racism. Members of the Flandreau Santee Sioux tribe discuss their efforts to keep the Dakota language alive. A teenager in Eastport, Maine, who works in the summer as a lobsterman plans ahead for a time when climate change will move the lobster business away.Deborah says that of the pair, James (the former Jimmy Carter speechwriter and longtime journalist for The Atlantic) is the historian, and she is attuned to what’s happening in the moment. They complement each other well. Still, as enjoyable as their writing can be, the filmmaking around them — aerial shots, time lapse photography, cuts to the couple looking engrossed — is less inspired than their project. Our TownsNot rated. Running time: 1 hour 37 minutes. Watch on HBO platforms. More

Lena Dunham Draws Inspiration for 'Catherine, Called Birdy' From Drew Barrymore's 'Ever After'

    Instagram/Twentieth Century Fox

When appearing on ‘The Drew Barrymore Show’, the ‘Girls’ creator and star talks about her passion project which happened to be a movie adaptation of Karen Cushman’s funny 1994 book.

    Apr 13, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Lena Dunham has turned to Drew Barrymore and her 1998 fairytale “Ever After” for inspiration as she works on her new movie “Catherine, Called Birdy”.

The “Girls” creator and star has been eager to adapt Karen Cushman’s funny 1994 book for close to a decade and she is currently in London to start filming on the passion project.

The story follows a teenage girl’s adventures in Medieval England as she dodges her father’s attempts at setting her up in arranged marriages and Dunham reveals she has been revisiting Barrymore’s old work to help her prepare for her own venture.

During a virtual appearance on America’s “The Drew Barrymore Show”, Dunham told the actress-turned-talk show host, “I’m in England right now because I’m about to start shooting a film that I’ve been trying to make for almost 10 years.”

      See also…

“It’s called ‘Catherine, Called Birdy’, and it’s a medieval coming-of-age comedy, which…has some ‘Ever After’ inspiration happening in it,” she elaborated, “So it’s kind of kismet that I’m getting to look at your face right now, because I’ve been looking at your face on some vision boards for my medieval coming-of-age comedy.”

Dunham is directing “Catherine, Called Birdy”, which will star Bella Ramsey as the titular character, alongside Andrew Scott, Joe Alwyn, Dean-Charles Chapman, and Billie Piper.

Aside from talking about her upcoming movie, Dunham talked about sobriety with Drew. “I love to think it was this very Zen choice, like, ‘You know what? I think I’m just gonna have a dry January,’ and then it turned into a dry every day, but no, it was like, ‘Girl, you’ve got to get it together!’ But it turned out to be the greatest thing I ever did…,” she confessed.

    AceShowbiz –
“Queen & Slim” director Melina Matsoukas has been commissioned to create a film to accompany the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s new two-part exhibition, which will be highlighted with a pair of Met Gala celebrations.

The annual celebrity-packed high-fashion affair was canceled last year (2020) due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but officials at the Met have revealed the ball will be back with a “more intimate” version on September 13, while a second, larger party will be held in its usual spring slot on the first Monday in May 2022.

The galas will help to launch “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”, which will mark the 75th anniversary of the museum’s Costume Institute organization and “explore a modern vocabulary of American fashion.”

The second part, “In America: An Anthology of Fashion”, will open in May 2022, and feature special collaborations with a variety of filmmakers, who will be “presenting narratives that relate to the complex and layered histories of those spaces.”

Joining Matsoukas will be “Selma” cinematographer Bradford Young, production designers Nathan Crowley and Shane Valentino, and The Black List founder Franklin Leonard in contributing to the changing material in the exhibition, curated by Andrew Bolton.

In a statement, Met Director Max Hollein says, “Fashion is both a harbinger of cultural shifts and a record of the forces, beliefs, and events that shape our lives.”

“This two-part exhibition will consider how fashion reflects evolving notions of identity in America and will explore a multitude of perspectives through presentations that speak to some of the complexities of history with powerful immediacy.”

Both art exhibits will close in September 2022.

    Apr 13, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Sebastian Stan is getting cheeky to promote his new movie “Monday”. Trying to draw people’s attention to his upcoming film, the actor took to Instagram on Monday, April 12 to post a picture of his bare butt.

In the NSFW image, the Bucky Barnes a.k.a. Winter Soldier of Marvel Cinematic Universe wore nothing but a coat and sneakers while posing in the middle of an empty street. He faced away from the camera while holding his coat open underneath the streetlight.

“MONDAY, the movie. Out this Friday, April 16,” the 38-year-old wrote in the caption. “When I say we gave it our ‘all’, we literally did,” he claimed, before directing his fans and followers to a link in his bio to find out how to watch the movie. He added the hashtags #yesthisisashamelesspromotionphoto, #whywait and #herestoagreatweek.

Stan is indeed successful with his attempt to generate attention with his NSFW photo as many have left comments underneath his post. One was from fellow actor Scott McGlynn who quipped, “You can definitely crack a peanut here.”

“Grey Gardens” director Michael Sucsy commented, “Well THAT got everyone’s attention.” A grateful fan wrote, “Thank you for your service.” Another follower delivered a pun, “What a beautiful night. The full moon is out.”

“Monday” is an American-British-Greek romantic drama that centers on Mickey (Stan) and Chloe (Denise Gough), two Americans in their mid-thirties living in Athens, who meet in the heat of summer one whirlwind weekend. When Chloe’s time in Greece is drawing to a close, she decides to give up her high-flying job back home and explore whether one weekend’s passion can stand the reality of the inevitable Monday.

Directed by Argyris Papadimitropoulos from a screenplay by Papadimitropoulos and Rob Hayes, the film has received generally favorable reviews from critics. It had its world premiere in September 2020 at the Toronto International Film Festival and is due to open in U.S. theaters on April 16.

Will Smith and Antoine Fuqua Pull 'Emancipation' Filming From Georgia to Protest Voting Restrictions

    WENN/Derrick Salters

In a statement announcing their decision to move production of the slavery drama to another state, Smith and Fuqua slam the government ‘that enacts regressive voting laws that are designed to restrict voter access.’

    Apr 13, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Will Smith and Antoine Fuqua are making an actual move to show their stance on the restrictive voting laws of Georgia. They are withdrawing the production of their upcoming movie “Emancipation” from the state due to the new law.

Smith and Fuqua, who are both producing the slavery drama, announced the decision on Monday, April 12. “At this moment in time, the Nation is coming to terms with its history and is attempting to eliminate vestiges of institutional racism to achieve true racial justice,” they said in a joint statement. Slamming the government for imposing the new law, they stated, “We cannot in good conscience provide economic support to a government that enacts regressive voting laws that are designed to restrict voter access.”

Smith and Fuqua went on stressing, “The new Georgia voting laws are reminiscent of voting impediments that were passed at the end of Reconstruction to prevent many Americans from voting. Regrettably, we feel compelled to move our film production work from Georgia to another state.”

      See also…

The movie was initially scheduled to begin filming in Georgia on June 21. It’s currently unknown where the film’s production will move and if it will cause a delay on the start date. The drama becomes the first major production to leave the state because of the new law.

In addition to producing via his media company Westbrook Inc, Smith is starring in “Emancipation” as Peter, a fugitive from slavery who is fleeing Louisiana in the hopes of traveling north to freedom. Fuqua, meanwhile, is also directing from a script by William N. Collage. The project has been sold to Apple Studios in a deal reportedly valued at $120 million.

The new rules that were passed by the state legislature shorten the duration of absentee voting, require absentee voters to produce identification, limit the use of drop boxes and make it a crime to hand out free food or water to voters standing in line. Critics have maintained that the regulations amount to voter suppression, aimed at reducing the turnout of people of color.

In the wake of the new voting restrictions, filmmakers like James Mangold and actors such as Mark Hamill have vowed to boycott film and television production in Georgia. Meanwhile, Georgia-based corporations such as Delta and Coca-Cola have condemned the law and Major League Baseball opted to move the All-Star Game out of Atlanta.
