Charles Dance Recalls How David Fincher Pitched Him William Randolph Hearst Role for 'Mank'

    WENN/Ivan Nikolov

Speaking about his ‘megalomaniac’ part in the acclaimed new movie, the ‘Alien 3’ actor claims to be inspired by former President Donald Trump and media tycoon Rupert Murdoch.

    Mar 22, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Charles Dance jumped at the chance to be a glorified extra in David Fincher’s acclaimed new movie “Mank”.

The actor appeared in the director’s first film, “Alien 3”, and the pair has kept in touch over the years, but the Brit was still surprised when the moviemaker asked him to play newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst in his latest project, which explores the making of Hollywood classic “Citizen Kane”.

Dance was delighted to work with Fincher again and admits he would have done anything on set.

“Out of the blue, I got this email saying he’s making a film around the making of ‘Citizen Kane’, and how would I like to go over and play Hearst?” Charles tells The Daily Telegraph magazine. “He said, ‘It’s a glorified extra, but I’d love you to do it’. I read the script and thought it was a bit more than a glorified extra, more of a telling cameo, but I said, ‘David, I would come and change light bulbs for you’.”

After accepting the role, the actor reveals former U.S. President Donald Trump and media tycoon Rupert Murdoch helped inspire his portrayal of the “megalomaniac” Hearst.

“I read a couple of books, tried to get examples of his voice, (but) also thought about people of my generation, like Rupert Murdoch and – although he’s considerably down the intellectual scale – Donald Trump. Hearst was an extraordinarily wealthy man, but he was a bit of a megalomaniac, and veered between being entertaining and charming and being a complete b**tard.”

Fincher famously has exacting standards and shot most scenes dozens of times, with one lengthy dinner scene taking over 40 takes to perfect, which Charles admitted was “very hard” on lead actor Gary Oldman.

“It was very hard work for Gary, because wherever David was shooting, it was either on Gary or a reaction from one of us – so Gary, rightly but also generously, was just firing on all 12 cylinders [in every take],” he explains.

All the hard work paid off – “Mank” is not only a critical hit, it landed more Oscar nods than any other film when the Academy Awards nominations were announced last week, March 15.

    Mar 22, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
The Writers Guild of America Awards has presented the trophies for the best screenwriting for 2020. Announced on Monday, March 22, the winners of the 2021 WGA Awards included “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and “The Crown”.

The “Borat” sequel won for Adapted Screenplay. The movie’s star Sacha Baron Cohen co-wrote the script with Anthony Hines, Dan Swimer, Peter Baynham, Erica Rivinoja and others based on the characters he created.

Accepting the award, Cohen quipped of the film’s long list of writers, “I can’t help but think that we won it because 60 percent of the Writers Guild worked on this movie.” He added, “A film like this is extremely hard to write, partly because it stars real people whose behavior is completely unpredictable. Well, apart, of course, for Rudy Giuliani, who did everything we hoped for.”

“Promising Young Woman” emerged as a victor in Original Screenplay category, with the award going to Emerald Fennell. Fennell, who also directed the film, said in her speech, “I wish I could be in the room and see everyone in person. As it is, I will say thank from my bleak writers room in England.”

“The Dissident”, written by Mark Monroe and Bryan Fogel, rounded up the movie winner list with its win in Documentary Screenplay category.

“The Crown”, meanwhile, won one of the coveted awards in TV categories as it nabbed the best script for a drama series, with the trophy going to Peter Morgan and Jonathan Wilson. Jason Sudeikis’ sports drama “Ted Lasso”, however, was the biggest winner in television field at it nabbed two awards, for Comedy Series and New Series.

‘Promising Young Woman’ and ‘Borat’ Win at Writers Guild Awards

In three of the last five years WGA winners have gone on to take the screenplay Oscars. But union rules mean that not all of the Academy Award nominees were eligible here. Two of this award season’s most unique contenders triumphed Sunday night, as the dark dramedy “Promising Young Woman” and the heavily improvised “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” took honors at the Writers Guild of America ceremony. In the original-screenplay category, the “Promising Young Woman” writer-director Emerald Fennell faced stiff competition in the form of 13-time WGA Award nominee Aaron Sorkin, whose “The Trial of the Chicago 7” is also considered a top Oscar contender. But Fennell was nominated for a best-director Oscar while Sorkin was snubbed, and the WGA win for “Promising Young Woman” is another key laurel for that film as it heads into the homestretch of the season. In his acceptance speech for “Borat,” Sacha Baron Cohen joked that the improvised movie may have won a screenplay award because it “employed 60 percent of the Writers Guild.” The large team of writers included Baron Cohen, Anthony Hines, Dan Swimer, Peter Baynham, Erica Rivinoja, Dan Mazer, Jena Friedman and Lee Kern, with a story by Baron Cohen, Hines, Swimer and Nina Pedrad. Because the movie is a sequel based on a pre-existing character, it won in the adapted screenplay category. In three of the last five years — including 2020, when “Jojo Rabbit” and “Parasite” triumphed — the two films that won the WGA Awards also went on to win their respective Oscar races. But two years ago, the guild gave its original-screenplay prize to “Eighth Grade,” a script that Oscar voters had failed to even nominate. And narrow rules of guild eligibility often preclude Oscar front-runners from taking part in the WGA Awards at all: This year, “Nomadland,” “Minari” and “The Father” were all ruled ineligible, since they were not written under a bargaining agreement from the WGA or its sister guilds. Still, if Fennell and the “Nomadland” writer Chloé Zhao go on to win the original and adapted screenplay Oscars, it will be the first year when both script races were won by women who were the sole credited writers of their films.WGA nominees were asked to send acceptance speeches ahead of time; only the winner’s would be played during the ceremony, which was pretaped and hosted by Kal Penn. Here are some of the night’s other top winners:Documentary screenplay: “The Dissident,” Mark Monroe, Bryan FogelDrama series: “The Crown,” Peter Morgan, Jonathan WilsonComedy series: “Ted Lasso,” Jane Becker, Leann Bowen, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, Joe Kelly, Bill Lawrence, Jamie Lee, Jason Sudeikis, Phoebe Walsh, Bill Wrubel. (“Ted Lasso” also won best new series.)Original long form: “Mrs. America,” Tanya Barfield, Joshua Griffith, Sharon Hoffman, Boo Killebrew, Micah Schraft, April Shih, Dahvi WallerAdapted long form: “The Queen’s Gambit,” Scott Frank, Allan Scott, based on the novel by Walter Tevis More

Dua Lipa Has Been Looking at Scripts as She Plans to Branch Out Into Acting

    Instagram

The ‘Don’t Start Now’ hitmaker reveals that she has been reading some scripts as she is hoping to launch an acting career and follow in Lady GaGa’s footsteps.

    Mar 21, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Dua Lipa has been reading scripts for a potential move into acting.

In a new interview with the Los Angeles Times, Dua revealed that she’s been looking at various possibilities, with the writer commenting that an acting gig “seems all but inevitable.”

While she didn’t go into any further details about the kinds of scripts she’s been reading, the “Don’t Start Now” hitmaker previously told The Scotsman in an interview last year (20) that she was keen to follow in Lady GaGa’s footsteps by taking on a TV show like “American Horror Story”.

“I would love to do that. I wouldn’t want do acting right now – I don’t think I’m quite there yet, I think I should focus on music – but if I was to try TV it would have to be something as crazy as a show like that,” she grinned.

Dua is currently at the top of her game in the music industry and recently celebrated her Best Pop Vocal Album Grammy award for her LP “Future Nostalgia” at a butterfly-themed party thrown by her boyfriend Anwar Hadid.

The celebration came after Dua branded her Best Pop Vocal Album Grammy Award win “insane.”

Reflecting on her award, she said, “Oh my goodness. Wow, thank you so much. This is insane. Future Nostalgia means the absolute world to me and it has changed my life in so many ways. But one thing that I have really come to realise is how much happiness is so important. I felt really dated at the end of my last album where I felt like I only had to make sad music to feel like it mattered. And I’m just so grateful and so honoured because happiness is something we all deserve and need in our lives. This means so much. Thanks to my family and friends watching at home, I love you, thank you.”

Adam Lambert Auditioned for Latino Role in Lady GaGa's 'A Star Is Born'

    Instagram

The ‘American Idol’ alum reveals he did a test for the Latino gay character in the Bradley Cooper-directed musical romantic drama movie even though he’s not Latino.

    Mar 21, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Adam Lambert auditioned for the role of Lady GaGa’s gay pal in “A Star Is Born” even though he knew he was a bad fit for the part.

Keen to be part of Bradley Cooper’s movie, the singer agreed to test for the role of Ramon even though he wasn’t Latino.

“It was so funny to me, because they told me about it and they were like, ‘She’s going to have, like, a gay best friend,’ and I was like, ‘OK, that could be cute,’ ” Adam said during an appearance on the latest episode of podcast “Brenda, Call Me! With Courtney Act and Vanity”, “and then I got the script and it was like… He was a Latin American character, like he was a Latino character.”

      See also…

“His name was Latino, a lot of the slang that he was using (was Latin). He was calling her (Gaga’s character) ‘Mami’ and all this stuff, and I was like, ‘Now how is this gonna work? Should I just not go to the audition? This is not my part.’ ”

The part eventually went to “Hamilton” actor Anthony Ramos.

Anthony Ramos, Lady GaGa, and their castmates went on to get nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the SAG Awards while the movie received numerous accolades including an Oscar, Golden Globe, and several Grammys.

Adam Lambert himself is no stranger to acting. He guest-starred on several episodes of “Glee”, joined TV movie “The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do the Time Warp Again”, made a cameo appearance in Freddie Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody”, and lent his voice to animated film “Playmobil: The Movie”.

Carey Mulligan Admits She Struggled to Find Right Roles Before Oscar Nomination

    WENN

The ‘Promising Young Woman’ actress hopes her Best Actress nomination at the upcoming 93rd annual Academy Awards bring her more great roles in the future.

    Mar 20, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan feels she is always waiting for her next role because she isn’t a Marvel movie star.

The “Promising Young Woman” actress admits it can be difficult for her to find work at times because she isn’t a producer and exciting scripts don’t always “filter down” to her, but she’s thankful she receives at least one offer for an “unmissable” project every year.

“I just act, so I wait for the scripts…,” Carey tells The Guardian. “I don’t see a huge change yet, but I’m not the first person that would get a script necessarily, in terms of not being in a Marvel movie. So things aren’t necessarily always filtering down to me.”

      See also…

“But there’s a feeling that there are more (good roles for women) and there are people being very proactive, like (Promising Young Woman writer/director) Emerald (Fennell), like Phoebe Waller-Bridge, like Margot Robbie – women who are being very deliberate about creating new and exciting things.”

Mulligan also reveals she was worried about taking on her latest role as a vengeful former medical student because the character wasn’t a mum.

The actress, who shares kids Evelyn, five, and Wilfred, three, with husband Marcus Mumford, explains, “When I read the Promising Young Woman script, I felt the way that you do when you watch (Oscar-winning movie) Parasite. Constantly wrongfooted, like, ‘Oh my word, what is this?’ In a good way. I also felt the thing that I always want to feel: that I would be gutted if anyone else played this part. I had to do it, but also I didn’t know how to do it.”

“I’d been exclusively playing mums for a bit. I had a teenage son in Wildlife and then I had children in Mudbound… and then, suddenly, I was a bit like, ‘Can you still buy me as pre-kids?’ It wasn’t anything I’d massively articulated, but I was like, ‘OK, I’m gonna be in that zone again.’ There were lots of things about it that I felt like, ‘I have no idea how to do this.’ ”

John Travolta and Nicolas Cage Interested in 'Face/Off' Sequel

    WENN

According to director Adam Wingard, the two original actors would love to reprise their respective roles for the upcoming sequel of the 1997 action movie if the script is to their liking.

    Mar 20, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Filmmaker Adam Wingard wants John Travolta and Nicolas Cage to reprise their characters for his “Face/Off” sequel.

The director is overseeing a follow-up to the 1997 action film and hopes the two stars will return as FBI agent Sean Archer and terrorist Castor Troy to provide a “definitive continuation” to the original.

“To me, Face/Off isn’t about a procedure or anything like that,” Adam told Showbiz CheatSheet. “It’s not about the world that the characters exist in. It’s about Sean Archer and it’s about Castor Troy. That’s what this movie is about. It’s the continuation of that story. It’s hard to talk about other than that but this is, to me, the definitive continuation of that saga.”

The “Godzilla vs. Kong” director revealed Travolta and Cage are interested in the project, but they are holding out for a script, which is being written by Wingard and Simon Barrett.

      See also…

“We’re still writing the script so it’s still in early phases,” the director adds. “Simon and I are very close to turning in our draft to Paramount soon. We’ll have to get over those hurdles of, ‘Do they like this movie?’ They’ve read our outline. Everybody’s on board with it but actually turning in the script’s a different thing, so we’ll see how everybody reacts to it.”

The original movie, directed by John Woo, revolved around Archer’s all-consuming mission to catch Troy, the man who killed his son. Taking going undercover to the extreme, Archer undergoes cutting edge facial transplant surgery, so he can take on the identity of Troy and head into prison to prevent another attack after the criminal falls into a coma.

However, Troy unexpectedly wakes from his coma and takes on Archer’s face, which leaves the real agent desperate to stop his nemesis and reclaim his face and life.

Wingard insists the two characters will be at the centre of the plot for the new movie.

Aaron Sorkin Keen to Turn 'Trial of the Chicago 7' Into Musical

    Netflix/Niko Tavernise

The award-winning filmmaker reveals he has asked for permission from studio bosses to adapt the Sacha Baron Cohen-fronted true-story movie into a stage production.

    Mar 20, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Aaron Sorkin considered turning “The Trial of the Chicago 7” into a musical.

The 59-year-old filmmaker helmed the historical drama, which is based on the infamous 1969 trial of seven men charged by the federal government with conspiracy and inciting a riot, as a result of the counterculture protests in Chicago at the 1968 Democratic National Convention, and revealed that he approached film bosses about turning into a stage production.

Aaron said, “People laugh at me when I say this, but there was about a year in there where I asked DreamWorks, if I could take a year and try writing Chicago as a play.”

“And they gave me permission to and I had a really tough time doing it. But I knew in my heart that this, actually, with the right composer and lyricist, can be a great musical.”

      See also…

Aaron has penned the screenplay for acclaimed projects such as “The Social Network” and the TV series “The West Wing” and he believes there is a musicality to writing good speech for characters.

He told Variety’s “Awards Circuit” podcast, “If you’re going to write a speech, you want the water to boil, you want to be able to get there.”

“It’s almost like in a musical. A musical number always works best when it’s the result of words no longer being able to do the trick.”

The director previously explained how he was “scared” of getting behind the camera on the movie because of its all-star cast, which includes Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Michael Keaton among others.

Aaron explained, “It was scary directing Chicago 7. I only have one movie under my belt, Molly’s Game, which had three principal characters. This film has 11 stars, most of whom are leads in their own movies.”
