Olivia Munn Takes Issues With Bryan Singer Landing Jobs After Leaving 'X-Men' Filming for Days

    WENN/Avalon

The ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ actress reveals in new interview that the replaced ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ director took 10 days off during filming to fix a ‘thyroid issue’ without saying anything.
    Apr 29, 2020
AceShowbiz – Olivia Munn still can’t understand why people like Bryan Singer land blockbuster jobs in Hollywood after working with him on her first “X-Men” movie.
The actress reveals she thought it was strange when the director took 10 days off during filming to fix a “thyroid issue” but said nothing at the time because she thought that might be the norm for a big-name moviemaker.
“You see these people who keep failing up, and they’re not that great and you think, ‘Really?'” the outspoken star tells Variety. “When we shot X-Men, I never shot a huge movie like that before. I didn’t know what was right or wrong, but I did know that it seems strange that Bryan Singer could check out and say he had a thyroid issue.”
“Instead of going to a doctor (locally) in Montreal, which is a very high-level, working city, he said he had to go to L.A. And he was gone for about 10 days… He said, ‘Continue. Keep filming’. We’d be on set, I remember there’s a big scene that we’d have, and we’d come back from lunch and then one of Bryan’s assistants would come up and show us a cell phone with a text message on it. He texted to the actors: ‘Hey guys. I’m busy right now. But just go ahead and start filming without me’.”
“I never thought any of it was normal, but I didn’t realise that other people also thought it wasn’t normal. And the other people who thought it wasn’t normal would be people at high levels, people who make decisions on whether to hire this person… This person is allowed to continue to go on. Fox still gives him ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, and then we all know what happened.”
Singer was fired as the director of the Queen biopic after reportedly insisting on taking a Thanksgiving break and failing to return to work on time. He was replaced by Dexter Fletcher.
Munn believes studio executives should seek out more passionate women and minorities to make movies, rather than risk throwing money at people with questionable reputations.
“I think that if we made way for more of those people and held people accountable, there’s so many great human beings out there and directors and artists. It’s not just with women but with minorities. And representation matters. You don’t know if things are possible until you see other people doing it.”

AMC Theaters and Universal Brawl After ‘Trolls World Tour’ Is Online Hit

LOS ANGELES — Universal Pictures took a victory lap over “Trolls World Tour” on Tuesday morning, saying that the film’s successful video-on-demand release had proved a new business model. The studio vowed to make more movies available without an exclusive theatrical run, even when theaters reopen.AMC Theaters, the largest theater operator in the world, took the studio’s assertion as a declaration of war.Adam Aron, AMC’s chief executive, told Universal late on Tuesday that it would no longer book any of the studio’s films. Universal is home to the “Jurassic World,” “Fast and Furious” and “Despicable Me” franchises. The studio also owns Focus Features, a specialty division.“With this proposed action to go to the home and theaters simultaneously, Universal is breaking the business model and dealings between our two companies,” Mr. Aron wrote in a letter to Donna Langley, Universal’s chairwoman. “It assumes that we will meekly accept a reshaped view of how studios and exhibitors should interact, with zero concern on Universal’s part as to how its actions affect us.”Mr. Aron called Universal’s plan “categorically unacceptable” and said AMC would also boycott any other studio “contemplating a wholesale change to the status quo.” More

The Oscars Will Allow Films to Skip a Theatrical Release This Year

The Oscars are making history again, but there’s a catch. As movie theaters across the globe remain closed due to the coronavirus, the motion picture academy met Tuesday to approve several new rules and changes for the next Oscars telecast. Here’s the big one: For the first time, a streaming film may skip a theatrical release entirely and still remain eligible for the Academy Awards. “The academy firmly believes there is no greater way to experience the magic of movies than to see them in a theater,” the academy president, David Rubin, and chief executive, Dawn Hudson, said in a joint statement. “Our commitment to that is unchanged and unwavering. Nonetheless, the historically tragic Covid-19 pandemic necessitates this temporary exception to our awards eligibility rules.”The rule change is not expected to last beyond the 93rd Academy Awards, which are still scheduled for Feb. 28, 2021. It also comes with a strict stipulation: Only films that had a previously planned theatrical release are still eligible for Oscar consideration. That rule will bar traditional TV movies from entering the Oscar fray, but it may also complicate award-season bids for independent films that were banking on a buzzy fall-festival debut to net a distributor and release date. The academy also noted that the rule would remain in effect at least as long as theaters were closed under federal, state and local guidelines. More

Barbra Streisand Deemed Too Old for 'Gypsy' Movie

    WENN

Actress Patti LuPone who played Madame Rose in the 2008 Broadway revival thinks the lead role should be given to a younger actress in the movie adaptation.
    Apr 29, 2020
AceShowbiz – Broadway legend Patti LuPone has urged Barbra Streisand to give up her dream of starring in a planned movie adaptation of hit musical “Gypsy”, because she’s “too old.”
Streisand has been desperately trying to get the passion project up and running ever since she received the blessing of playwright Arthur Laurents to adapt the show prior to his death in 2011.
She helped to develop the screenplay and wanted to direct and star in the big screen reboot as classic stage mother Mama Rose, but the film, loosely based on burlesque dancer Gypsy Rose Lee’s memoirs, remains in limbo after years of setbacks.
Now LuPone, who won her second Tony Award for her portrayal of Rose in the 2008 Broadway revival, insists Streisand should allow another, younger actress to tackle the famed role – if “Gypsy” ever makes it into production.
“I’m sure there’s technologies (to make her appear younger onscreen) so that she could do it,” LuPone mused when asked for her thoughts on U.S. chat show “Watch What Happens Live”.
“I think maybe 50 years ago she would have been a brilliant Madame Rose. (But) I think she’s too old.”
“Gypsy”, which features musical anthems like “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” and “Rose’s Turn” by famed lyricist Stephen Sondheim, was first made for the big screen in 1962 when Rosalind Russell portrayed Mama Rose. Bette Midler played the character in a TV project in 1993.

    ‘System Error’ Review: Growing Pains

“System Error,” a documentary now available on demand, uses a series of quotations from Karl Marx to offer diagnoses of the modern economy. Its central idea is that “growth,” as an economic mantra, has become such an article of faith globally for politicians and financiers that they have become blind to its potential limits and consequences. Toward the end, the movie, directed by Florian Opitz, projects a world in which capitalism will devour itself: Thanks to automation, jobless workers won’t have the wages to pay for the goods that ostensible prosperity has produced.Tim Jackson, an ecological economist at the University of Surrey in England, says that in nature, mechanisms that grow unchecked “end up basically killing their host.” The film lays out the environmental effects of rapid transformations in agriculture and transportation, and it notes ways in which markets and trading have become divorced from the public and the broader economy.[embedded content]If the movie’s points can be well taken, its rhetorical strategies are often facile. An Airbus executive in China talks about economic progress and the profound shift from bicycles to cars there — but then is pressed to admit that traffic jams are “a real headache in Beijing.”The CNBC correspondent Bob Pisani says it is difficult to engage viewers with the ambiguities of markets — that he can’t go on television and say “there is no real meaning of anything that’s happening today.”But it is easy to make seemingly uncritical financial-sector boosters look like fools; it is harder to grapple thoroughly with economic trade-offs. The subject matter of “System Error” is better suited to tables and charts, not a movie that uses editing tricks and an anxious score to goose its points.System ErrorNot rated. In English, German, Portuguese and Mandarin, with subtitles. Running time: 1 hour 35 minutes. Rent or buy on Amazon, iTunes and other streaming platforms and pay TV operators. More
