Wham!'s Classic Song 'Last Christmas' Rules U.K. Chart

The festive single, originally released by George Michael’s band in 1984, has hit the pinnacle at the U.K. chart, pushing aside Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’.

    Jan 3, 2021
AceShowbiz – George Michael’s classic Wham! hit “Last Christmas” has become the U.K.’s first number one of 2021.
The festive favourite sets a new chart record as the longest time taken for a single to hit the top spot – it was originally released back in 1984. Tony Christie’s “(Is This the Way to) Amarillo” was the last holder of that record, at 33 years and four months.
“Last Christmas”, which rises from three to one, marks the first time in 24 years a song by the tragic singer has topped the countdown – the pop legend, who died on Christmas Day (25Dec) in 2016, last achieved the feat in 1996 with “Jesus to a Child”.

Celebrating the news on Friday (01Jan21), his Wham! bandmate Andrew Ridgeley posted on Twitter, “I am delighted, somewhat amazed & profoundly pleased that WHAM!’s iconic Christmas classic Last Christmas has finally achieved the accolade of becoming a No 1.”
“It’s a fitting tribute 2 George’s songwriting genius and 1 of which he would’ve been immensely proud & utterly thrilled (sic).”
Another recent long-overdue festive number one, Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You”, holds steady at two, ahead of Jess Glynne’s “This Christmas”.
Meanwhile, Michael Buble takes his Christmas release to pole position on the U.K. albums chart, with Taylor Swift’s “Evermore” staying put at two and Dua Lipa’s “Future Nostalgia” kicking off the New Year at three.

Jonathan Cain Remembers the Time Prince Reached Out to Him for 'Purple Rain'

    Instagram

The Journey keyboardist shares the ‘cool’ story after his bandmate Neal Schon covered the late music icon’s hit 80s anthem for his new solo album, ‘Universe’.

    Jan 2, 2021
AceShowbiz – Journey star Neal Schon’s cover of Prince’s “Purple Rain” for his new solo album, “Universe”, was a full circle moment for the guitarist, as the late music icon’s anthem was inspired by the band’s song “Faithfully”.
Schon’s bandmate Jonathan Cain recalls Prince reaching out to him back in 1984 and playing “Purple Rain”, admitting the chord changes resembled those on Faithfully – and he didn’t want the rockers to sue him.
“He said, ‘I want to play something for you, and I want you to check it out…’,” Cain tells Billboard. “I thought it was an amazing tune, and I told him, ‘Man, I’m just super-flattered that you even called. It shows you’re that classy of a guy. Good luck with the song. I know it’s gonna be a hit’.”

Cain was rewarded with “amazing seats” on Prince’s “Purple Rain” tour. “I thought it was ridiculous how cool it was,” he adds.
Schon initially released his “Purple Rain” cover to mark Prince’s birthday in June (2019) and performed the song at a tribute show in Minnesota later the same month. Alongside the audio, Schon’s friend Rick Barron wrote an anecdote that read, “Late ’80s and I am sitting with Prince on the floor in his apartment at Paisley Park. We’ve listened to Joni Mitchell, Peter Gabriel.”
He went on to share, “I notice a worn Journey Escape record in his collection. Surprised, I turned to him and said, ‘Never took you for a Journey fan.’ He gave me that doe-eyed look that always made me uncomfortable and said: ‘Neal Schon is one of my favorite guitarists on the planet. … He is a genius.’ ”
“Neal’s beautiful interpretation makes the loss of the colossal talent of ‘P’ a little less sad. They are each prodigy’s that have woven themselves into the fabric of our lives and our lives are richer as a result,” Barron concluded.

Rihanna Reacts to Fan Telling Her to Release New Album in 2021: 'Grow Up'

    WENN/Avalon

The Fenty Cosmetics founder catches wind of a fan’s comment on her Instagram post in which the fan suggests that the singer’s resolution in 2021 ‘should be releasing the album.’

    Jan 2, 2021
AceShowbiz – Rihanna will release new music when she feels like to. The “Umbrella” hitmaker has made it clear when responding to one of her Instagram followers who weighes in on Rih’s resolution in 2021.
On January 1, the singer and cosmetic mogul treated her fans to pictures of her looking stunning in sparkling two-piece green dress. The pictures saw the Barbados-born musician posing by the pool in what seemed to be her mansion in her native country. “new year’s resolution: apply the pressure,” so she captioned the pics.

One fan, however, thought that Rihanna should have made another thing her resolution for this year. “Resolution should be releasing the album,” the fan wrote in the comment section, referring to the singer’s long-rumored and now-infamous album “R9”. Another fan similarly added, “Speaking of pressure, it’s the album for me.”

Rihanna caught wind of the comments and decided to respond to the first user. “this comment is sooo 2019,” the Fenty Cosmetics founder wrote back to the fan, before urging her to “grow up.” She doubled down on her response as she replied again, “2021 energy,” alongside laugh-crying and flexed bicep emojis.

Fans initially speculated that the album might be coming soon as Skylar Grey shared a snippet of a song she’d revealed that she worked on with Diplo for the “Diamonds” hitmaker’s album. According to Grey, she and Diplo collaborated on the song “when Rihanna was supposedly doing some kind of reggae album.”
Prior to this, Rihanna sparked chatter after she shared a mysterious video on Instagram, seemingly hinting at the project. “Update: me listening to R9 by myself and refusing to release it,” she wrote back in late December 2019 alongside a clip of a small white dog energetically head-banging to House of Pain’s classic cut “Jump Around”.
That aside, Rihanna is currently enjoying the new year celebration in Barbados with her rumored boyfriend A$AP Rocky. In one picture that circulated online, the lovebirds were snapped enjoying a four-person rider tube called the Sportsstuff Great Big Mable on the water on Monday, December 28. Putting her hands around her man’s waist on a yacht, Rihanna was also seen leaning in to give him a kiss.

He was 49.The rapper’s record label, Rhymesayers, provided the statement, signed by Mr. Dumile’s wife, Jasmine. The label did not give the cause of death or say why it was being announced two months later.Over six solo albums released between 1999 and 2009 and five collaborative LPs (with Madlib and Danger Mouse, among others) between 2004 and 2018, Mr. Dumile honed a style that was intricate and imaginative, calling on both esoteric and lowbrow references as well as cartoonish imagery in lyrics that could be poignantly emotional.Born in London and raised on Long Island, he grew up steeped in early hip-hop. He debuted in 1989 on the 3rd Bass track “The Gas Face” with a standout cameo that helped him get a record deal for his own group, KMD, in which he rapped as Zev Love X.The act included his brother, Dingilizwe, who performed under the name DJ Subroc. Its first album, “Mr. Hood,” arrived in 1991 on the major label Elektra. During the recording of KMD’s second album, “Black Bastards,” Subroc was killed in a car accident, and the label later declined to release the record. Mr. Dumile vanished from the entertainment business but continued to work on music privately while he raised his son.He resurfaced in 1997 with the single “Dead Bent,” his first song under the name Metal Face Doom. (The persona was a nod to the Marvel villain Doctor Doom.) Around the time of the release of the album “Operation: Doomsday” in 1999, which featured a masked character on its cover, Mr. Dumile began hiding his face in public, at first with a stocking mask and later a metal one, which became his signature. In a 2009 interview with The New Yorker, he said the mask had become necessary when he made the leap from the studio to the stage. “I wanted to get onstage and orate, without people thinking about the normal things people think about,” he said. “A visual always brings a first impression. But if there’s going to be a first impression, I might as well use it to control the story. So why not do something like throw a mask on?”Once an underground cult figure, Mr. Dumile found greater fame with albums in the mid-aughts. “Madvillainy,” which arrived in 2004 with the producer Madlib, was a breakthrough.“He delivers long, free-associative verses full of sideways leaps and unexpected twists,” the critic Kelefa Sanneh wrote in reviewing a 2004 concert in The New York Times. “You think you know where he’s heading and what each sentence will mean when it ends. Then it bends.”On “Raid,” a track from “Madvillainy,” he rhymes:Trippin’, to date the Metal Fellow been rippin’ flowsSince New York plates was ghetto yellowWith broke blue writing, this is too excitingFolks leave out the show feelin’ truly enlightenedReleased in the same year, his album “MM .. FOOD” (an anagram of his stage name) included tracks like “Gumbo,” “Kon Queso” and “Kon Karne.” In rapping about the seemingly mundane topic of food with goofiness and wit, he was “showing respect for human life,” he told Spin in 2004.“I’m more like a writer dude rather than a freestyler,” Mr. Dumile told The Chicago Tribune that same year. “I like to design my stuff, and I consider myself an author.”Mr. Dumile rapped under different personas and later became known for sending impostors out onstage to perform for fans; in his trademark metal mask, it was difficult to know the difference. The body doubles often disappointed fans but sparked viral moments online, like when an apparent MF Doom drop-in at a concert turned out to be the comedian Hannibal Buress. In 2017, Mr. Dumile announced on social media that his son, King Malachi Ezekiel Dumile, had died at 14. Information on survivors was not immediately available.Though he never reached mainstream superstardom, Mr. Dumile was widely admired by fellow rappers and producers. He was “your favorite MC’s MC,” wrote Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest on Twitter. In a post on Instagram, El-P wrote: “thank you for keeping it weird and raw always. you inspired us all and always will.”Caryn Ganz contributed reporting.AdvertisementContinue reading the main story More

Elton John Sick and Tired of Playing 'Crocodile Rock' at Every Concert

    WENN

The ‘Rocket Man’ hitmaker jokes that he would rather ‘kill’ himself than play ‘Crocodile Rock’ again as he wishes he could play the more obscure tracks from his back catalogue.

    Jan 2, 2021
AceShowbiz – Sir Elton John has joked he’d “kill (himself)” if he has to perform “Crocodile Rock” again.
The “Rocket Man” star is retiring from touring and once his final concerts – which have been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic – have taken place, he wants to take on a small residency somewhere and play the more obscure tracks from his back catalogue because he’s tired of playing the same hits night after night.
“I’m lucky to have so many great songs to play every night. But there is a point in time where you think, ‘I don’t really want to play this anymore’,” he told Record Collector magazine. “There are things like Original Sin or (Gotta Get A) Meal Ticket that I haven’t really played before – not enough anyway. But if I have to go back and play Crocodile Rock again, it’s like, ‘I’m gonna kill myself.’ ”

“So, after I’ve finished this tour, I don’t want to play some of these songs any more. I’d like to do something like Kate Bush, where I can do a show and play some of these songs that are deep cuts.”
The “Tiny Dancer” hitmaker has performed with a number of huge artists over the years, and remembers being in the presence of “true greatness,” which was often so overwhelming, he was “frightened.”
“I just loved (Aretha Franklin). She sang her last show at our AIDS Foundation event in 2017, at St. John The Divine Cathedral,” he recalled. “I’ll never forget it, because I was standing by the stage with Roseanne Cash and Sheryl Crow and we were just crying because she was playing the piano and she was so ill and yet she came on and did Bridge Over Troubled Water.”
“And afterwards, she said, ‘This is it I’m never going to sing again – this is the last thing I’ll ever do.’ But those are the moments you know you’re with true greatness. Sometimes that’s frightening.”
