Charlie XCX Invites Fans to Collaborate With Her in New Isolation Album

    WENN

Tentatively titled ‘How I’m Feeling Now’, this follow-up to the ‘Boom Clap’ hitmaker’s third studio release is planned to be made available for listening on May 15.
    Apr 7, 2020
AceShowbiz – Pop star Charli XCX is giving fans the opportunity to feature on a brand new album she’s creating entirely in isolation.
The “Boom Clap” hitmaker has been finding new ways to let her creative juices flow during her forced downtime, and now she’s planning to channel that energy into a forthcoming new project, which she plans to release on 15 May.
“For me, staying positive goes hand-in-hand with being creative, and so that’s why I’ve decided that I’m going to use this isolation time to make a brand new album from scratch,” Charli explained in a video announcement on Monday, April 06.
“The nature of this album is gonna be very indicative of the times, just because I’m only gonna be able to use the tools that I have at my fingertips to create all music, all artwork, all videos, everything. In that sense, it’ll be very DIY (do it yourself).”
Calling for input from her social media followers, she continued, “I’ll also be reaching out to people online to collaborate with. And I’m going to keep the entire process super open so that anybody who wants to watch can.”
“I’ll be posting demos, I’ll be posting a cappellas, text conversations with any collaborators. I’ll be filming myself in the studio, I’ll be doing Zoom (video) conferences to ask fans or anyone watching for opinions or ideas. I’m going to set up an email address so that fans or anyone can send me beats or references.”

Tentatively titled, “How I’m Feeling Now”, the album will serve as the follow-up to her third studio release, 2019’s “Charli”.
The British singer has been keeping fans entertained online during the coronavirus lockdown by staging daily Instagram Live events, featuring conversations and performances with fellow artists like Tove Lo, Christine and the Queens, Orville Peck and Zara Larsson, as well as yoga sessions with Ashnikko and even a life drawing class with Los Angeles-based multimedia artist Lucas David.

Judge Dismisses Case Against Universal Music Over Losses in 2008 Fire

A federal judge in Los Angeles has dismissed a lawsuit brought by several musicians and estates last year, following a New York Times Magazine article about a fire that destroyed huge numbers of original recordings. The Times Magazine reported that the fire, on a Hollywood backlot in 2008, destroyed over 100,000 audio recordings containing as many as 500,000 songs controlled by the Universal Music Group, the world’s biggest recorded music company.Among the artists that had lost “single and album masters” in the fire, according to the article, were Tom Petty, Tupac Shakur and Steve Earle, as well as the bands Soundgarden and Hole. Representatives of those artists or their estates sued Universal in June, arguing that the company had been negligent in protecting their tapes and that the company had a duty to share with artists any income it received from an insurance settlement over the fire.Since the case was filed, all plaintiffs had dropped out except Jane Petty, a former wife of Mr. Petty, who said she had an interest in his recordings through a divorce agreement. On Monday, Judge John A. Kronstadt of the United States District Court in Los Angeles dismissed Ms. Petty’s claims. The dismissal was made “without prejudice,” giving Ms. Petty the ability to refile her case. But Judge Kronstadt’s 28-page ruling found her claims legally deficient, and in one crucial passage said that MCA — Mr. Petty’s former record label, which is now part of Universal — owned the rights to his original recordings, known as masters. Since Mr. Petty did not own them, the judge ruled, Ms. Petty could not sue under a claim for “bailment,” or safekeeping.A lawyer for Ms. Petty did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment on Monday.Universal has long maintained that the Times Magazine article, by Jody Rosen, exaggerated the extent of the damage in the fire, and in a statement on Monday called the original piece and a follow-up article “stunning in their overstatement and inaccuracy.”In a statement, Jake Silverstein, the editor of the Times Magazine, said: “We stand by Jody Rosen’s reporting. This ruling does not refute or question the veracity of what we reported: that, contrary to UMG’s continued effort to downplay the event, thousands of recordings were lost in the 2008 fire.” More

Has the Coronavirus Made the Internet Better?

On a recent Saturday night, Derrick Jones, a D.J. who performs under the name D-Nice, live-streamed himself working his turntables from his home in Los Angeles, where he was self-isolating. He started early in the afternoon and played deep into the night, pausing only to sip his drink, take the briefest of bathroom breaks and change into a new flamboyant hat. Despite all the chaos outside, here, online, was a safe harbor. The only thing contagious was the mood, which was jubilant. As names of friends — and increasingly, famous people — floated across his screen, he would grin and call out their names in greeting: Rihanna. Dwyane Wade. Michelle Obama. Janet Jackson. As the night stretched on, the party shifted into something more meaningful than a celebratory distraction. Time and space collapsed as tens of thousands of people experienced the same song, the same shared spirit, no matter who or where they were. Kind of like Covid-19 itself. At one point, apparently inspired, Jones shouted out thanks to all the nurses, doctors and hospital workers. His eyes drifted to the number of people in the “room,” surging toward 150,000, and paused, amazement shaping the contours of his eyes and mouth. “We should raise some money or something,” he said. What D-Nice seemed to realize in that moment was something many people have realized since Covid-19 gripped the country: Social media could be mobilized for something far greater than self-promotion. Artists have taken to You-Tube or Instagram to provide some relief, to allow us to gather together and listen to an opera, or hear a standup set, or watch a poetry reading, all of us separate but still together. But more remarkable, it has become the medium by which people have organized to help others. More

The Weeknd Repeats at No. 1, but Spotify’s Top Songs Are Slipping

The Weeknd’s new album, “After Hours,” lost 69 percent of its sales in its second week out, but in another slow week for new music it still had enough to stay atop the Billboard 200 chart.“After Hours” had the equivalent of 138,000 sales in the United States last week, according to Nielsen — down from its opening of 444,000, which was the biggest debut for any album this year. The latest tally for “After Hours” included 47,000 copies sold as a complete package and 119 million streams (down from 221 million). Its total was helped by the addition of three new songs to the album, as well as what Billboard counts as more than 90 deals on the Weeknd’s website offering copies of the LP with sales of merchandise. For about a month now, the coronavirus epidemic has been changing online listening patterns. The effect is complex, and may be tied to shifts in people’s listening habits. Some genres, like classical and children’s music, are seeing gains, as are older hits, perhaps as listeners seek solace in their favorites. But one change is clear: Streams of the top 200 songs on Spotify have been sliding. Last week, listeners in the United States streamed those songs 530 million times, according to publicly available data from the service. That is the third straight weekly decline in this metric, and its lowest for the entire year. It is even lower than the 554 million recorded for the last week of 2019, a period when listening usually drops. How much lower will it go?Also on this week’s chart, the Australian band 5 Seconds of Summer reached No. 2 with its latest, “Calm,” and Lil Uzi Vert’s hit “Eternal Atake” dropped one spot to No. 3. “Future Nostalgia,” the new album from Dua Lipa, the pop singer who won the Grammy Award for best new artist last year, opened at No. 4, and Pearl Jam’s “Gigaton” opened at No. 5. Artist of the Week: Doja Cat

The ‘Say So’ hitmaker became a viral sensation when her 2018 single ‘Moo!’ caught a lot of people’s attention due to its eccentric music, lyrics and visuals.
    Apr 6, 2020
AceShowbiz – Just like any other industry, the music industry has also evolved over time to the point that it gets harder for up-and-coming artists to make a name for themselves. In Doja Cat’s case, she needs to work for a few years before she finally gets the popularity she deserves, and it’s all thanks to the uniqueness she brought in the game.
Doja has been in the industry since 2013, but she became a viral sensation in 2018 when her single “Moo!” caught a lot of people’s attention due to its eccentric music and visuals. Up until this day, the meme-worthy music video has garnered more than 11 million views. The release was then followed by her debut studio album “Amala”, which did pretty well in music charts.
Despite that, it wasn’t until 2019 that Doja finally got to taste how it felt like to have your song charted on Billboard’s Hot 100. Her single “Juicy” peaked at No. 41 on the weekly chart, marking it her first song to ever do that.
Doja’s popularity only rose higher after that, especially after her song “Say So” went viral thanks to a TikTok challenge created by Haley Sharpe. It went to peak within the top ten on Hot 100 and marked another career milestone for Doja. Not only that, but the song also received positive reviews from music critics with Nerisha Penrose of Elle writing that the song offered “a healthy dose of nostalgia as Doja’s hushed, airy voice floats over a bed of iridescent synths and a funky bassline.”
“Say So” served as the fifth single off her second studio album “Hot Pink”, which also included another viral single “Rules”. Garnering generally positive reviews, the record peaked at No. 17 on Billboard 200. Meanwhile, on Top R&B/Hip-Hop chart, it peaked at No. 10.

    WENN

Carrie Underwood is ‘Drinking Alone’, Miranda Lambert sings from her wedding site, while Brad Paisley and Darius Rucker team up for a rendition of ‘Wagon Wheel’ and pay tribute to the late Kenny Rogers.
    Apr 6, 2020
AceShowbiz – Country music stars have joined forces to entertain their fans as they continue to stay at home amid the coronavirus crisis. On Sunday, April 5, the likes of Shania Twain, Lady Antebellum, Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Luke Bryan, Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani took part in “ACM Presents: Our Country”, which aired in place of the now-postponed 2020 Academy of Country Music Awards.
Luke kicked off the show with an uplifting performance of “Most People Are Good” from his comfy couch. Dressed in a white button-down shirt, he played acoustic guitar as he crooned the optimistic lyrics, “I believe this world ain’t half as bad as it looks/ I believe most people are good.”

Shania, meanwhile, serenaded her horses as she took the camera into her stable for her performances of “Honey I’m Home” and one of her hits “Man! I Feel Like a Woman”. At one point, her horse got a little too attentive, rubbing against her face and licking her strings as she was singing. Being a professional as she is, the 54-year-old kept singing while smiling.
Miranda, on the other hand, was surrounded by serenity as she sang from her farm in Tennessee. I actually got married right here, she said of the place. Miranda sat on her porch while delivering a rendition of “Bluebird” and playing her guitar.
Brad Paisley and Darius Rucker connected via FaceTime for a duet of “Wagon Wheel”. Brad was seated on his truck bed with an acoustic guitar while Darius sang from his front porch in Charleston, S.C. They also paid tribute to the late Kenny Rogers, who passed away in March, with a cover of “Lucille” and “The Gambler”. Earlier, Brad belted out his feel-good song “Mud On the Tires”.

Carrie aptly sang her song “Drinking Alone” as she talked about surviving while in home quarantine. “Now we have to find things to do when we’re alone together,” she said from her living room. “We’re not really alone. We are alone together, and this is exactly how we’re going to get through this mess.”

Lady Antebellum was not alone as the members enlisted their children while socially distancing at their respective homes. Dedicating their single “What I’m Leaving For” to the doctors, nurses, first responders and everyone in the medical field on the frontlines of the coronavirus, they were joined by their kids to deliver the poignant ballad. Charles Kelley sang with his son Ward on his lap, Dave Haywood’s son Cash sat behind his guitar before the boy stole the show by making some funny faces in front of the cameras.
Blake and Gwen, who are quarantining together, delivered their duet “Nobody But You” from their home in Oklahoma. “We’re happy to be in Oklahoma hiding away … drinking all day,” Blake jokingly said as he gave an update of their live while in self-isolation.
Keith Urban sang “Wasted Time”, which he said has taken on a different meaning in the midst of the coronavirus crisis, Thomas Rhett sang his new song “Be a Light”, which lyrics deliver a message of togetherness, while Kane Brown and John Legend joined forces for a television debut of their new duet “Last Time I Say Sorry”.

Other artists taking part in the two-hour television special included Tim McGraw, Sheryl Crow, Dierks Bentley, Florida Georgia Line, Thomas Rhett and Brandi Carlile among others.
