Lil Dicky the Rapper Makes Way for Dave the TV Star

Dave Burd was brushing his teeth when he started crying. It was 2013, and after working by himself on his music for 18 months — not even sharing songs with friends or family — the aspiring rapper finally was ready to post his first video, for a song called “Ex-Boyfriend,” on YouTube.“I had been so focused on the task at hand that I hadn’t stepped back to reflect until I was there looking in the mirror,” Burd said of that day. “I knew how hard I had worked. I felt real satisfaction having given it my all.”He was also surprisingly certain about what he’d achieve. “I’ve always been very self-believing and felt I was destined for stardom,” he said, with his trademark bluntness about what he calls “my almost foolish level of confidence.”Burd hoped “Ex-Boyfriend,” which like most of his songs, has its share of sexual references but leans more heavily on self-deprecating wit, would launch his career by garnering perhaps 100,000 views within a year. He was wrong: the video was watched more than 1 million times in just 24 hours. Dave Burd, ad agency employee, had become Lil Dicky, rap’s hottest newcomer.“That was the best day of my life, because it showed I am who I thought I was,” said Burd, who turns 32 later this month. That dramatic bathroom scene is not part of “Dave,” the new comedy about Burd’s transformation, premiering Wednesday on FXX, that is otherwise chockablock with moments taken from Burd’s actual rap life.“Dave has a bucket of shameful, embarrassing, amazing stories,” said the show’s co-creator Jeff Schaffer, who was also a creator of “The League” and an executive producer on “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Seinfeld.” This gave him instant credibility with Burd, who idolizes Larry David.Burd had been publicly stating for years that he wanted to create his own TV show. He was eventually introduced to Schaffer, who after several conversations was sold on Burd’s commitment and convinced there was enough material for a series.“Even if he was an accountant, his interactions with people would be worthy of a TV show,” Schaffer said, adding that he believes Burd has “a lot of Larry David in him” and is a natural comedic writer. “But he was like a rap Don Quixote tilting at the ‘legitimacy’ windmill.”Schaffer said several networks were interested in “Dave,” but he had a strong relationship with FX Networks and the programming executive Nick Grad, who happened to be a big Lil Dicky fan. (FXX is the network’s comedy-focused channel.) The series is also executive produced by the comedian Kevin Hart and the “Superbad” director Greg Mottola, who credits Burd with having “more to say than his nom de plume would imply.” (Mottola decided to direct several episodes himself because of “the questions of race and gender that the show grapples with,” he said.)The pilot begins just after Lil Dicky has gone viral, and is trying to convert instant fame into a career. (Well, technically it opens with Dave detailing to a doctor all the things wrong with his genitalia.) Later, he’s so eager to work with the rap star YG he withdraws his bar mitzvah money to pay for the privilege — a symbol of how different Dave’s path is from most rappers’.Dave also meets GaTa, who is also on the hip-hop scene’s fringes and later becomes Lil Dicky’s hype man. GaTa is, in fact, Lil Dicky’s real life hype man and, like Burd, has no previous acting experience. The remaining co-stars are experienced actors, including Taylor Misiak as Dave’s girlfriend Ally and Andrew Santino as Mike, Dave’s roommate and eventually his manager. Throughout the episodes, many scenes are improvised to heighten the naturalism as Lil Dicky tries to transform himself from a viral gimmick into a respected rapper.“The arc of the first season is, how do you go from having people view your video to being viewed as an actual rap artist?” Schaffer said.Burd, with typical modesty, said his rookie TV effort has exceeded his own high expectations, especially considering he has “not made a show before, never acted before and everything I’ve written has had to rhyme. I feel I’m destined to be amazing at this craft.”“I’ll be brutally disappointed if it isn’t one of the most explosive comedies on television,” he said.Burd’s statements often seem over the top, but in conversation, he has none of his alter ego’s braggadocious manner. He speaks in a low-key, thoughtful tone, whether he’s praising FX executives for their helpful notes, or telling you why he is, definitively, obviously, a genius and the greatest at whatever he does. It’s as if Muhammad Ali brought in Eli Manning to recite his prefight poetry.“Dave” shares Burd’s real back story: a Jewish kid from the Philadelphia suburbs who got good grades and worked in advertising after college. “David always dreamed big,” his mother, Jeanne Burd, wrote in an email. “He was not afraid to say what was on his mind and he was always fearless and confident.”While Burd’s family thought he had found the perfect outlet working in advertising, he had bigger dreams: He wanted to be a rapper, a comedian with his own TV show or an NBA player. (“That’s not ruled out yet,” he deadpanned about the third option. “I definitely train twice a week so we’ll see — I’m a never-say-never type of guy.”)Burd’s ad agency job proved inspirational in a pragmatic way. “Making music videos had seemed so unachievable but I saw all these things getting produced on a day in day out basis, and learned how technologically feasible creating high-end art was,” he said.Burd started producing his first mixtape in 2011. His parents tried to dissuade him from releasing the risqué “Ex-Boyfriend” video, but his grandiose predictions came shockingly true: Each song and video was more successful than the last, and a Kickstarter campaign to fund new production outpaced the goal.Something like legitimacy came in 2015, when he released his first official album, “Professional Rapper.” It featured appearances by Snoop Dogg and Fetty Wap, topped both the comedy charts and the rap charts and reached No. 7 on the Billboard Top 200. The title track, featuring Snoop Dogg, now has more than 95 million Spotify listens and 173 million YouTube views. The single “Freaky Friday,” his 2018 collaboration with the R&B singer Chris Brown, drew more than 465 million listens and 583 million views.“I always took him seriously,” GaTa said. “Because he’s a white rapper you knew it was not going to happen overnight, but it happened fast because he has a vision and he’s driven and he’s that talented.”Unsurprisingly, Burd agreed with that assessment. “In my heart I feel I’m one of the best rappers alive,” he said.Burd’s rise hasn’t been without its hiccups. His perfectionism, “hyper neuroticism and worry” slow production — he has yet to finish a second album. (He says the relentless pace of making a TV show causes “extreme anxiety, but in a way, being forced to make decisions is good.”)More significantly, he has waded mouth-first into plenty of controversy. “White Dude” offers some sharp lines like: “Everybody naturally assumes I’m a great person/I get a fair shot at the life I deserve/I mean I could underachieve my way into any college in the country.” But the song and video also featured more troublesome moments that seemed to obliviously revel in white privilege: “Happy that my name ain’t stupid/Dave coulda been Daquan with a few kids.”Burd was defensive in interviews, most infamously one that appeared in 2014 on Noisey, the Vice music blog. He claimed he had “everything to lose” in his middle-class white life by becoming a rapper, and that it wasn’t his fault if his mostly white-dude fans don’t understand “brilliant satire.”“Freaky Friday” drew even more flak: Lil Dicky and Brown switch bodies, so Lil Dicky, suddenly African-American, uses the N-word with abandon, while Brown makes light of his history of domestic abuse.GaTa believes Burd “meant no harm,” he said, so he counseled his friend, “you’re coming from a pure place, so don’t hold back.”But Drew Millard, who wrote that Noisey article, said in an interview that someone with a marketing background should understand the implications of these videos. “But he knows what is working in the marketplace and does not care,” he said.(Jon Caramanica, a pop critic for The Times, wrote that Lil Dicky’s work “displays a lumpy jumble of entitlement and irony.”)Burd maintains a “strong belief in my own moral compass, and I really believe in the art of the joke,” he said. But he no longer wields the word “satire” as a shield and has since removed “White Dude” from his YouTube Channel. He admitted he regrets some past decisions and said he owns his mistakes.“I’m maturing every day, and certain things I thought and said are a far cry from what I think now,” he said.“Dave” will follow a similar trajectory. Schaffer said the plan is for the TV Dave “to start pretty oblivious to his privilege and grow from there through his growing friendship with GaTa.”GaTa’s character also allows the show a chance to change its tone with an episode about his real-life struggles with bipolar disorder. “It was tough to dig into those thoughts emotionally but I want to help other people in my situation,” GaTa said.Burd knew the switch in tones was risky but ambition is central to his vision of himself. “It’s a big swing and if you miss it looks terrible, but if you connect it adds so much more depth to the show,” he said. “This can change people’s lives.”Schaffer knows Burd can sound absurdly self-aggrandizing, but he cautions people not to dismiss him.“Dave is always talking about being the biggest entertainer in history, even though he looks like a piece of broccoli had a bar mitzvah,” Schaffer said. “Everybody who has doubted him ends up being very wrong.” More

Mariah Carey Concludes Las Vegas Residency Amid Struggle to Sell Tickets

    Instagram

The ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ hitmaker ends her ‘The Butterfly Returns’ residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace right on schedule even though ‘she’s not selling out like she used to.’
    Mar 2, 2020
AceShowbiz – Mariah Carey’s Las Vegas residency came to an end, but not on a high note. The “All I Want For Christmas Is You” hitmaker concluded her “The Butterfly Returns” residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas on Saturday, February 29 amid reports she struggled to sell its tickets.
For the final show, the 49-year-old singer rocked a plunging black leotard with a detachable black skirt. At one point, she removed the skirt to reveal a pair of nude fishnet tights and matching platform heels. She wore her long blonde locks down and showed off her beauty through glam palette of makeup. She was also seen donning a classy pink gown for the stint.
While the “Touch My Body” singer delivered stunning performance, her residency apparently didn’t fare well in the ticket department. According to Radar Online, she gave free tickets to selected people in order to make sure “sold out” shows even though the highest ticket for her residency was sold for an average of $100.
“Every high roller and whale who’s flying into Vegas is being given free tickets to her show,” a source told the outlet. “They’re being handed out at sports books, included in room service bills and slipped under doors all over the hotel. That’s why she wanted a residency and not a tour – because she’s not selling out like she used to.”
“The Butterfly Returns” residency was a follow-up to Carey’s #1 to Infinity residency which lasted from 2015 to 2017. First launched in July 2018, it got extended for additional February 2019 dates a few months later. Its latest run was for eight February 2020 dates. Radar Online claimed that ticket sales had been low since the beginning, forcing her to sell them at discount sites back in 2018.
Carey’s next move will be headlining Britain’s world famous Brighton Pride event. On Valentine’s Day, organizers confirmed that she will perform at the LGBTQ+ event in August. Their announcement tweet read, “Excited to announce global superstar @MariahCarey, GRAMMY & GLAAD Award winner, and best-selling female artist of all time, will headline FABULOSO Pride In The Park on Saturday 1st August 2020 with a full 75 minute show!”

Artist of the Week: Billie Eilish

The ‘Bad Guy’ hitmaker continues to be unstoppable as she wins big at the Grammys, delivers a touching performance at the Oscars, and makes history with her James Bond song.
    Mar 2, 2020
AceShowbiz – 2020 is bound to be another big year for young rising star Billie Eilish. She kicked off the new year with a bang as she took home a total of five Golden Gramophones including the coveted Album of the Year at the 62nd annual Grammy Awards back in January.
She made history as the youngest person and first woman to win the four main categories, Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Album of the Year, in the same year. It’s all thanks to her debut album “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?”.
The 18-year-old singer/songwriter then followed it up with a performance at the biggest movie awards, the Oscars. Joined by her brother Finneas O’Connell, she delivered a touching rendition of The Beatles’ ever-lasting single “Yesterday” during the “In Memoriam” segment.
On top of that, she has been enlisted to sing the title track for the upcoming twenty-fifth installment in the James Bond film franchise, “No Time to Die”. With her brother as a producer, she became the youngest artist in history to write and record a 007 theme song.
Shortly after it’s released and debuted during her live performance at the Brit Awards, the single soared to No. 1 on the U.K. charts. It became the second Bond song to top the charts and also gave the female artist her first number one single in the United Kingdom.
Despite all her accomplishments, Billie Eilish keeps herself grounded. On the Grammy night during the Album of the Year winner announcement, she was caught on camera repeatedly mouthing, “Please don’t be me,” before yelling, “No!!” when she’s announced as the victor.
During her acceptance speech, she revealed she was actually rooting for fellow artist Ariana Grande. “Can I just say that I think Ariana deserves this?” she said. ” ‘Thank U, Next’ got me through some s**t, and I think it deserves this more than anything in the world.”
Her brother later explained her reluctance to receive the award, “We were both kind of embarrassed to win so much; you hope that it will be kind of equal, but after the third in a row…well, we love all of our fellow nominees.”
She also had an unlikely reaction to her Oscar performance. Despite getting rave reviews online, she said it could have been better. “I bombed that performance,” she said. “That was trash.”

Judy Garland Orchestral Arrangements Bring In More Than $30K in Auction

The sold collection, which includes ‘Over the Rainbow’ arrangements, has been found in a trunk the late actress left behind at the Plaza Hotel in New York City in the late 1960s.
    Mar 2, 2020
AceShowbiz – A large collection of Judy Garland’s orchestral arrangements has sold at auction for more than $30,000 (£23,460).
Hundreds of song arrangements, including notes for classics like “Over the Rainbow”, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, and “I’m Always Chasing Rainbows”, were found in a trunk left behind by the late singer/actress at the Plaza Hotel in New York City in the late 1960s.
She had primarily used the pieces for her variety series, “The Judy Garland Show”, which aired for one season until 1964, and for a number of stage performances, including at Broadway’s famed Palace Theatre.
The case and its contents were later given to Costas Omero, director/producer of the Plaza show Look Me Up, and his daughter placed it up for sale via Nate D. Sanders Auctions.

The lot sold on Thursday night (February 27) for $30,599 (£23,930) – more than 10 times its starting price of $3,000 (£2,350).

Drake Slammed Over Michael Jackson Reference on New Song 'When to Say When'

    WENN/Instar/Danny Clifford

On the song, the Canadian rapper appears to make reference to music icon Michael Jackson and his Neverland home and that unsurprisingly doesn’t sit well with MJ’s fans.
    Mar 2, 2020
AceShowbiz – Drake excited fans when he released two new songs, “When to Say When” and “Chicago Freestyle”, on Sunday morning, March 1. On the former, the Canadian rapper appears to make reference to music icon Michael Jackson and his Neverland home and that unsurprisingly doesn’t sit well with MJ’s fans.
The song features the “In My Feelings” rapping about his accomplishments and how he goes back to his Canadian mansion to take a break over the past year. “Ayy, thirty-three years, I gave that to the game/ Thirty-three mill’, I save that for the ring/ Five hundred weeks, I fill the charts with my pain/ Five hundred mil and I fall back in the 6ix,” so Drizzy raps.
Later he adds, “Finally give you the n****s the space you need to exist/ Michael Jackson s**t/ but the palace is not for kids.” Drake is most likely referring to Michael’s famous home where the singer was accused of molesting Wade Robson and James Safechuck during their childhood.

“Drake coming for Michael Jackson? Oh he’s gonna get dragged ALL the way back to the Canadian border,” one fan commented on the lyrics. “Drake b***h go f**k yourself. You’re not worthy of mentioning Michael Jackson’s name let alone shade him in your ugly a** songs just for clicks. Stop using his name for clout, clown,” one other hotly tweeted.
“so Drake wants to drop Michael Jackson p*dophile jokes but spend money on a damn unreleased verse for his last album. that s**t is disrespectful af,” someone blasted Drizzy. Bringing up rumors of him grooming young artists like Millie Bobby Brown and Billie Eilish, one user wrote, “Drake really should’ve avoided that Michael Jackson line considering his own history with underage women.”
However, some others jumped to Drake’s defense quickly. “I didn’t take the Michael Jackson line as disrespect .. Clever fact… Drake walked that thin line tastefully and witty in my opinion,” a person shared. Meanwhile, someone else compared the situation to Nicki Minaj’s controversial Rosa Parks lyrics on “Yikes”.

50 Cent to Finish Pop Smoke's Album With Roddy Ricch's Help

    Instagram

The ‘Power’ star and co-creator has received a lot of support after publicly announcing that he’s going to executive produce the ‘Welcome to the Party’ rapper’s album posthumously.
    Mar 2, 2020
AceShowbiz – 50 Cent is going to finish what Pop Smoke had started before his sudden and tragic passing. The former G-Unit member has publicly announced that he’s going to executive produce the slain rapper’s full-length album.
The 44-year-old rapper/actor made the announcement on his Instagram page on Sunday, March 1. Sharing pictures of him sitting on the airstar of a plane and inside the private jet, he wrote in the caption, “i’m on the move listening to Pop smoke, i decided i’m gonna executive produce and finish his album for him.”
The “Power” star and co-creator has also reached out to Grammy-winning artist Roddy Ricch to enlist the latter’s help to complete Pop’s album. “Tell @roddyricch i’m looking for him, i need him on Pop album,” he wrote in another post.

50 Cent has since received a lot of support for his plan to honor Pop, with Steven Victor, CEO of Victor Victor Worldwide where Pop was signed, among one of them. The music executive left a heart emoji and “100” in the comment section.
“You are the best for doing this,” one of Fiddy’s followers responded to the announcement. Another appreciated his kind intention, “Your such a G bro much respect for giving back.” Someone else also praised him, “That’s what big brothers do finish what was started! NYC LOVE.”
Pop died after being gunned down by masked men in his Los Angeles home on Wednesday, February 19 in what was initially suspected as a home robbery. His family, however, has launched a private investigation amid speculation that his death might have been a targeted hit.
50 Cent was among the first who paid tribute to the rising star, posting on Twitter, “R.I.P to my man Pop Smoke, No sympathy for winners. God bless him.” He also wrote on Instagram, “No such thing as success with out jealousy, treachery comes from those who are close. R.i.P.”

Shania Twain Picks Jennifer Lopez and Lizzo as Dream Headliners for New VH1 Divas Live

    WENN/Instar/Adriana M. Barraza

Asked to come up with a line-up for a potential reboot of the charity gig, the ‘You’re Still the One’ hitmaker additionally names Ariana Grande and Fleetwood Mac legend Stevie Nicks.
    Mar 2, 2020
AceShowbiz – Country star Shania Twain would love to curate a new VH1 Divas Live concert with Jennifer Lopez and Lizzo leading the line-up.
The “You’re Still the One” hitmaker famously helped to launch the first annual event back in 1998, taking to the stage in New York City alongside Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and Gloria Estefan, with Carole King making a special guest appearance.
The charity gig, which benefitted the VH1 Save the Music Foundation, was held with a new slate of performers each year until 2004, after which it was revived in 2009 for a four-year run, and again for a show in 2016.
Shania is eager to see the show make another return to the spotlight, and this time around, she would want superstar J.Lo front and center.
Asked to come up with her dream billing for a potential reboot, the singer told U.S. daytime show “Strahan, Sara and Keke”, “Jennifer Lopez would be top of my list.”
Shania would also jump at the chance to have Fleetwood Mac legend Stevie Nicks join the party, branding her “probably one of the greatest storytellers, singer/songwriters ever,” and she would round out the performers with Ariana Grande and Lizzo.
“I would want Ariana Grande. I think she’s an amazing diva in the best way,” she gushed, before adding of Lizzo, “(The) newest on the scene, she’s a powerhouse.”
    [embedded content]
“That would be a great collection of ladies, don’t you think?” she smiled.
