Apollo Theater Announces New Series of Commissions

Throughout the 1970s and until the 1990s, the Apollo Theater in Harlem repeatedly fell on hard times and then bounced back to life again. But recent changes suggest that that is in the past and that the world-famous venue is now thriving. On Thursday, the Apollo announced a large-scale initiative to present a series of commissioned projects by artists. Supported by a $2 million grant from the Ford Foundation and a $1 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, “Apollo New Works” includes dance, theater and musical performances, as well as projects by Ta-Nehisi Coates, who became the Apollo’s inaugural master artist-in-residence in September.Among the other participating artists are the dance organization Ballet Hispánico, the storytelling project Black Gotham Experience and the playwright and screenwriter Keith Josef Adkins.“We felt like we had to take a more forward-looking stance,” Kamilah Forbes, the executive producer of the Apollo, said in an interview. The goal is for the venue to not only present new pieces, she said, but “to be a home for these artists to build and cultivate their work.”“Apollo New Works” is also an effort to “make a major shift in equity” and commission more black artists, Ms. Forbes said. The program follows two recent commissions at the Apollo: the stage adaptation of Coates’s acclaimed book “Between the World and Me,” and the opera “We Shall Not Be Moved,” a co-commission with Opera Philadelphia that was created by the composer Daniel Bernard Roumain and the librettist Marc Bamuthi Joseph.“Apollo New Works” is “an opportunity to put a much larger stake in the ground,” Ms. Forbes said. The Apollo will showcase many of the projects at two new black box theaters at the Victoria, a former movie theater on West 125th Street that is being redeveloped, and is scheduled to open in the fall. Fans Attempt to Rap as Fast as Eminem Through the #GodzillaChallenge

    WENN/Sheri Determan

The Detroit rapper dares fans to duplicate the tongue-twisting third verse on the ‘Music to Be Murdered By’ track and promises to give prizes for his favorite ones.
    Feb 27, 2020
AceShowbiz – Eminem’s fans are trying to give him a run for his money with their rap skills. Shortly after the “Lose Yourself” hitmaker launched a viral #GodzillaChallenge, people all around the world took to their social media accounts to show off their own “Godzilla” rap version.
The 47-year-old MC kicked off the challenge on Tuesday, February 25 by uploading a video of him rapping to his latest single from “Music to Be Murdered By” album. ” ‘Fill ’em with the venom and eliminate ’em’ ” @trillervids #GodzillaChallenge is on,” he wrote in the caption of the post. “Who can spit it? Reposting + got prizes for my favorites.”
The 30-second clip itself saw the “Without Me” rapper spitting 224 words with a total of 330 syllables for his collaboration with late rapper Juice WRLD. That means, 7.23 words came out of his mouth in just one second, according to Genius website.
Hours afterwards, many shared their attempt online. Hip hop dancer Matt Steffanina turned to his Instagram account to post a duet rap with his female rapper friend GЅnaps. “THE SUBTITLES CANT KEEP UP,” he exclaimed in the caption of his post. While his clip was short, it showed the two of them faring quite well in their rapid spit bid.

Russian musician Slame, meanwhile, seemed to be more serious in taking on the challenge. He even gave a Russian twist to his cover of “Godzilla” as he put out his video on the photo-sharing platform. Since its release, the 1-and-a-half minute clip has amassed more than 215,000 views.

“How to Make It in America” actor Bryan Greenberg, on the other hand, treated his fans to a bit of laughter with his attempt. Uploading a video of his effort on Instagram, he declared, “Who wants smoke? I just crushed this #godzillachallenge @eminem I’m ready to battle whenever!” His video, however, featured him missing lines and managing to only spit “fill ’em.”

#GodzillaChallenge came days after Eminem released the “Music to Be Murdered By”. The LP itself has many reference to sensitive issues, including the Manchester bombing at Ariana Grande’s concert and Las Vegas’ 2017 mass shooting. He said in an Instagram post, “This album was not made for the squeamish.”

“If you are easily offended or unnerved at the screams of bloody murder, this may not be the collection for you,” the rapper, whose real name is Marshall Bruce Mathers III, warned. “Certain selections have been designed to shock the conscience, which may cause positive action. Unfortunately, darkness has truly fallen upon us.”

    WENN/Avalon

When stopping by ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’, the Jonas Brothers member admits he was ‘annoyed’ no one informed him of the dental snafu before he got onstage.
    Feb 27, 2020
AceShowbiz – Nick Jonas learned he had spinach in his teeth during his Grammy Awards comeback performance from Adam Levine.
The star and his Jonas Brothers bandmates Kevin Jonas and Joe Jonas wowed the crowd when they performed their track “What a Man Gotta Do” at the ceremony last month (January), but the singer was embarrassed when he discovered he had been making headlines for all the wrong reasons.
And Jonas admitted he’s “annoyed” no one informed him of the dental snafu before the cameras caught it.
“Here’s the thing that’s really frustrating about this, OK? First of all, there was spinach in my teeth from my breakfast, which I ate hours before. So the entire day, no one thought to be like, ‘Hey man, there’s something back there,’ ” he said on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”.
After the Jonas Brothers left the stage, their manager gave Nick the bad news, leading him to check his phone – where he found a message from Adam Levine.
“We were really excited because the performance went pretty well and it was like our Grammy moment. Our return,” Nick added. “I was so amped and I was like, ‘What’d you think?’ and he’s like, ‘Well, just don’t check (texts on phone)!’ ”
He immediately checked his phone only to discover a teasing text from the Maroon 5 frontman.

“The first message on my phone was from Adam Levine. He’s like, ‘Nice performance. You had a little schmutz in your teeth.’ ”

Whitney Houston Hologram Tour Compared to Slavery

    Instagram

Negative reviews are pouring in shortly after the opening night of ‘An Evening With Whitney: The Whitney Houston Hologram Tour’ in the United Kingdom.
    Feb 27, 2020
AceShowbiz – The Whitney Houston hologram tour didn’t go down too well with reviewers on its opening night on Tuesday, February 25, 2020, with one commenting “it’s probably best to let sleeping stars lie.”
The 48-year-old singer, who died in 2012 and last toured in 2009, has been reincarnated in holographic form for “An Evening With Whitney: The Whitney Houston Hologram Tour”, which had its world premiere in Sheffield, England on Tuesday night.
And while many fans were thrilled with the likeness of the late star, created by BASE Hologram, some of the reviewers who watched the show had less than complimentary things to say about it.

“As any horror movie fan will tell you, bringing the dead back to life never works out well,” the Daily Mirror’s Alum Palmer wrote. “The firm behind the show has postponed an Amy Winehouse hologram tour but it’s probably best to let sleeping stars lie.”
Meanwhile, while the Daily Mail’s Jan Moir praised the “skillfully created” hologram, she admitted the show didn’t feel “entirely respectful” – to “force their ghost into slavery and profit from the imagery.”
“Dead is dead, after all,” she continued. “Don’t you think that there has been enough ignominy in Whitney Houston’s life? She doesn’t need this farrago of a show because her legacy is already there; burnished and beautiful in the recordings, the films, the concert footage, the music – and in our memories, too. So beam her back up, Scotty – and let her rest in peace.”
An Evening With Whitney: The Whitney Houston Hologram Tour will continue at various venues across the U.K., before travelling to Europe and North America.

David Roback, a Founder of the Band Mazzy Star, Is Dead at 61

David Roback, the composer and guitarist for Mazzy Star, a soft-spoken, influential alternative rock group whose 1993 release “Fade Into You” became a hit despite the group’s stated indifference to commercial success, died on Monday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 61.His mother, Rosemary Roback, said the cause was metastatic cancer. The music of Mazzy Star, which Mr. Roback formed with the singer Hope Sandoval in the late 1980s, combined his understated guitar playing with Ms. Sandoval’s haunting, enigmatic vocals. Contemporary pop artists like the xx have since embraced a similarly intimate aesthetic.Mazzy Star released its first album, “She Hangs Brightly,” in 1990. Mr. Roback and Ms. Sandoval played with a shifting lineup of other musicians, including the drummer Keith Mitchell and the bassist Jill Emery.According to Mr. Roback, mainstream success was not the point.“It doesn’t matter how well our records do,” he told The San Diego Union-Tribune in 1990. “None of that matters, because we’re completely free.”Critics lauded “She Hangs Brightly,” which found an audience among alternative rock fans but lacked a breakout hit. That came on Mazzy Star’s sophomore album, “So Tonight That I Might See” (1993), which Mike Boehm of The Los Angeles Times praised as “inward and deep” in a review.“It seems to flow from the fragmentary consciousness of a mind falling toward sleep during the last sentient moments of an emotionally wearing day,” Mr. Boehm continued. “This is not the rock of the shake and strut, but of the murmur and sigh.”The album opened with “Fade Into You,” an ethereal ballad that balanced gentle guitar and piano parts with Ms. Sandoval’s reverb-heavy chorus, “Fade into you/Strange you never knew.” The song became a mainstay on MTV and alternative rock radio stations and reached No. 44 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1994.But Mazzy Star just shrugged at all the attention. The group released another album, “Among My Swan” in 1996, then seemed to go on hiatus. Their next, and last, album did not come out until 2013, when they released “Seasons of Your Day.”“We never stopped writing or recording,” Mr. Roback told Rolling Stone that year. “We just stopped performing and releasing things.”He added: “When I’m working on music with Hope, the person that’s foremost in my thoughts is Hope. We tend to get quite caught up in just the making of the music for ourselves.”David Edward Roback was born in Los Angeles on April 4, 1958, to George and Rosemary (Hunter) Roback. His father was a doctor, his mother a registered nurse. He studied art at the University of California, Berkeley, and formed the band Rain Parade, which included his brother, Steven.Rain Parade was one of several bands in what became known as the paisley underground, a revival of psychedelic rock in California in the early 1980s. Mr. Roback left the group after it released its first album, “Emergency Third Rail Power Trip” (1983).In the mid-1980s he founded the group Opal with Kendra Smith, the bassist from Dream Syndicate, and the drummer Keith Mitchell. Opal, which featured Ms. Smith as lead singer and expanded on the paisley underground sound, released the album “Happy Nightmare Baby” in 1987.That year, Ms. Smith left the band while it was on tour, and Ms. Sandoval replaced her. In time, their collaboration became Mazzy Star.In addition to his mother, Mr. Roback is survived by his brother; his wife, Hedi (Raikamo) Roback; and a sister, Diane Roback.Critics compared aspects of Mazzy Star’s sound to earlier groups, like the Velvet Underground and the Doors, and contemporaries like the Cowboy Junkies. Mr. Roback bristled at such comparisons.“I’ve never even heard the Cowboy Junkies,” he told The Los Angeles Times in 1990, adding: “But then, I don’t listen to a lot of contemporary music. I kind of purposely try to avoid it because I don’t want to be influenced by it. I prefer the Rip Van Winkle approach to art.”Susan C. Beachy contributed research. More
