  • Halle Berry's Heart Aches for Being the Only Black Woman to Ever Win Best Actress at Oscars

    WENN

The Catwoman actress calls her 2002 triumph at the Academy Awards one of her ‘biggest heartbreaks’ as she knew other black women should have been there before and after her.
    Sep 11, 2020
AceShowbiz – Halle Berry’s 2002 Academy Award’s success is one of her “biggest heartbreaks” because “there was no place for someone like me” in Hollywood.
The actress took home the Best Actress prize for the film “Monster’s Ball”, making her the first Black woman to win the award – and she remains the only Black woman to have achieved the honour to date.
Despite the success, in an interview with Variety, the star reflected on the win and what has come since, including a deficit of role offers which has tainted her achievement.
“I think it’s largely because there was no place for someone like me,” Berry said. “I thought, ‘Oh, all these great scripts are going to come my way; these great directors are going to be banging on my door.’ It didn’t happen.”
She admitted, “It actually got a little harder. They call it the Oscar curse. You’re expected to turn in award-worthy performances.”
Nearly two decades after accepting the award, the star is astonished that no other Black woman has matched her accomplishment.
“I thought there were women that rightfully, arguably, could have, should have. I hoped they would have, but why it hasn’t gone that way, I don’t have the answer,” she insisted, naming “Harriet” ‘s Cynthia Erivo and “Loving” star Ruth Negga.
The “Catwoman” star continued, “It’s one of my biggest heartbreaks… The morning after, I thought, ‘Wow, I was chosen to open a door.’ And then, to have no one… I question, ‘Was that an important moment, or was it just an important moment for me?’ ”
“I wanted to believe it was so much bigger than me. It felt so much bigger than me, mainly because I knew others should have been there before me and they weren’t.”

  • Halle Berry Praised for Withdrawing From Transgender Role After Backlash

    Instagram

The ‘John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum’ actress apologizes after her teasing of her role as a transgender man in an upcoming film was met with criticism.
    Jul 7, 2020
AceShowbiz – Halle Berry has walked away from a film role that landed her in hot water. During an Instagram Live on Friday, July 3, the actress revealed that she had been preparing for a role that would see her as transgender character, but she had not been officially cast.
“[It’s] a character where the woman is a trans character, so she’s a woman that transitioned into a man,” she teased about the role. “She’s a character in a project I love that I might be doing.” Sharing her preparation for the role, she added that she wanted to take a “deep dive” into “that world,” likely referring to the trans community.
During the interview, Berry also misgendered the character multiple times. “Who this woman was is so interesting to me, and that will probably be my next project,” she said, much to people’s dismay.
One of those who criticized Berry’s potential role as a transgender was the Twitter account for the Netflix documentary “Disclosure: Trans Lives on Screen”, which was released last month and examines Hollywood’s portrayal of transgender people and their stories. The account handler wrote, “Hi @halleberry, we heard you’re considering playing a trans man in your next project. We ask that you please watch @Disclosure_Doc on @netflix first to understand how cis actors like yourself acting in trans roles has major cultural consequences offscreen. #DisclosureNetflix.”
The “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” star apparently noticed the backlash and has changed her mind about taking on the role. In a statement posted on her Twitter page on Monday, she apologized for misgendering the character and for considering to tackle the role.
“Over the weekend I had the opportunity to discuss my consideration of an upcoming role as a transgender man, and I’d like to apologize for those remarks. As a cisgender woman, I now understand that I should not have considered this role, and that the transgender community should undeniably have the opportunity to tell their own stories,” she wrote.
She continued, “I am grateful for the guidance and critical conversation over the past few days and will continue to listen, educate and learn from this mistake. I vow to be an ally in using my voice to promote better representation on-screen, both in front of and behind the camera.”
Berry has since been praised for her gracious response to the backlash. LGBTQ+ organization GLAAD tweeted, “We are pleased that @halleberry listened to the concerns of transgender people and learned from them. Other powerful people should do the same. A good place to start is by watching @Disclosure_Doc to learn about trans representation in media.”

GLAAD reacts to Halle Berry’s apology.
@Disclosure_Doc, which was among the first to bring up the matter, also commended the 53-year-old actress for withdrawing from the role. “Thank you @halleberry for listening and learning. We hope #DisclosureNetflix is one of many educational tools you and others can rely to inspire and strengthen allyship,” it reacted to Berry’s apology.

‘Disclosure: Trans Lives on Screen’ Twitter account commends the actress on her response to the backlash.
Other details of the project that Berry was considering to star in are not available since she didn’t mention the title during the Instagram Live interview.

AceShowbiz – Halle Berry has had to shave her daughter’s hair because she’s spending so much time in the family pool it has all matted together.
The Oscar winner was shocked to discover her 12-year-old Nahla’s hair had “shrunken up into a tight ball that feels like matted fur”, and when a conditioning treatment didn’t work, mum had to reach for the clippers.

The “Catwoman” star added, “She was not cool with that, but it was our only option. But now she gets it… I was like, ‘First of all, maybe you’ll let your mother help you. And second of all, you learned you gotta brush your hair. Every day, you gotta brush your hair.’ ”

Halle Berry Praises Pierce Brosnan for Saving Her From Choking During 'Die Another Day' Filming

    MGM

During an appearance on ‘The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon’, the actress playing Jinx in the 2002 Bond movie recounts the time the shooting of a fig seduction scene went wrong.
    Apr 23, 2020
AceShowbiz – Pierce Brosnan stopped James Bond co-star Halle Berry from choking while the pair were filming 2002 movie “Die Another Day”.
The actress, who played Jinx opposite Brosnan’s 007, told “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on Tuesday (April 21) that the actor saved her life after she got a fig caught in her throat.
“I was supposed to be all sexy, trying to seduce him with a fig, and then I end up choking on it and he had to get up and do the Heimlich,” the 53-year-old recalled. “That was so not sexy.”
The Heimlich manoeuvre is a first-aid procedure for dislodging an obstruction from a person’s windpipe by applying sudden pressure to the abdomen between the belly button and rib cage.
She continued: “James Bond knows how to Heimlich! He was there for me, he will always be one of my favourite people in the whole world.”
It wasn’t the only terrifying experience Berry had on set – the actress suffered an injury during an action sequence in Cadiz, Spain, when debris from a smoke grenade stunt lodged in her left eye.

According to EW.com, she was transported to a local hospital where doctors removed the piece of shrapnel.
