Kate Winslet Thought She'd Died While Husband Blacked Out When Freediving for 'Avatar 2'

    WENN

The ‘Titanic’ actress feared she’d died while doing the dangerous stunt for the upcoming ‘Avatar’ sequel while her hubby Ned Rocknroll fainted when training with her.

    Feb 23, 2021
AceShowbiz – Kate Winslet was convinced she’d “died” making “Avatar 2”.
The actress learned to freedive for the film – in which she will play Ronal – and has broken Tom Cruise’s film record by holding her breath under water for seven minutes and 14 seconds.
Though Kate thought the experience was “wonderful,” she was also aware of how dangerous it was.
“God, it’s just wonderful. Your mind completely drifts off. You can’t think about anything, you can’t make lists in your head, you’re just looking at the bubbles underneath you…” she recalled during the interview with Observer magazine.
“My first words (when I resurfaced) were, ‘Am I dead?’ Yes, I thought I’d died.”

Kate’s husband, Ned Rocknroll, trained with her and although he got “quite good,” he struggled spending too long under water.
“You have to have someone there. Ned trained with me and he got quite good at the breath holding as well. But he did… black out,” she added.
Kate Winslet was not the only cast doing her own stunt for the upcoming “Avatar” sequel.
71-year-old Sigourney Weaver, who is returning for the follow-up after starring in the first movie, was also determined to tackle difficult underwater scenes.
While admitting she was initially overwhelmed by the amount of underwater scenes in the script, she worked hard to prove she wouldn’t need a diving double.
“I had some concerns, but that’s what the training was for,” she previously told the New York Times’ T magazine. “And I really wanted to do it. I didn’t want anyone to think, ‘Oh she’s old, she can’t do this.’ ”

Kate Winslet Raves Over Becoming Fossil Expert Thanks to 'Ammonite' Role

    BBC Films

When talking about the Francis Lee-directed movie, the Oscar winner claims her experience portraying the Mary Anning character was the most inspired she has ever been.

    Dec 23, 2020
AceShowbiz – Kate Winslet became a fossil expert while shooting her new movie “Ammonite”.
The Oscar winner stars as acclaimed 19th century paleontologist Mary Anning in the new movie and director Francis Lee insisted his leading lady knew what she was talking about on camera, so he set up lessons with an expert.
And Kate suddenly found herself fascinated by fossils.
“I often get to learn a new skill or a new craft when playing a character, but I never imagined that I would be taught how to fossil hunt,” she explains. “Now I could take you to Lyme Regis (in England) and I would know what I was talking about. That was really important to me, because we didn’t want to use hand doubles – we wanted it to be as authentic as possible.”

“Also, this is something Mary was doing as a child, so it just had to be in my bones. Paddy Howe was our fossil expert down in Lyme Regis, and he was just terrific at sharing his knowledge – he made it really user-friendly. There was nothing daunting about the words that he would use or the techniques he would describe.”
“We’d spend days whacking rocks together on a beach, because sometimes ammonites can be lurking inside them. The people at the museum in Lyme were also incredibly helpful – that’s where Mary’s writings are; accounts of how she was thinking and feeling, and they were very generous in letting us access those.”
The combination of shooting the film with Lee and her co-star, Saoirse Ronan, in Lyme Regis and studying up on Anning left Kate buzzing when the movie wrapped.
“Walking away from playing her, I was the most inspired I have ever been by any character I’ve played,” she smiles.

  • Kate Winslet and Anthony Hopkins Dedicate TIFF Awards to Frontline Workers

    WENN

The ‘Titanic’ actress and the ‘Nixon’ actor are feted at the virtual ceremony of the Toronto International Film Festival along with another winner ‘Nomadland’ director Chloe Zhao.
    Sep 18, 2020
AceShowbiz – Kate Winslet and Anthony Hopkins dedicated the awards they received at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) to frontline workers fighting the Covid-19 pandemic.
The British actors both took part in the second annual TIFF Tribute Awards on Tuesday (15Sep20) night – a ceremony that was conducted virtually due to Covid-19.
The fundraiser featured an introduction from Martin Scorsese and featured presenters such as Ava DuVernay, Jodie Foster, and Olivia Colman – but the main honourees Anthony and Kate chose to celebrate healthcare workers in their video speeches.
“To be giving applause to anyone other than those who have and continued to be at the forefront of the battle against this virus across the world does feel decidedly out of place,” Kate, whose film “Ammonite” has screened at the festival, said.
Expressing her sympathies for those who have lost those close to them to Covid-19, she added, “I’d like to express my deepest sympathies to families and individuals whose lives have been forever altered by this past six months.”
Anthony also used his speech to thank those who have cared for those afflicted by the disease, saying, “I want to thank frontline workers, first responders, all over the world. This award is yours. So I thank you so much. From the bottom of my heart.”
Other honourees included director Chloe Zhao, whose film “Nomadland” has been a huge hit at the festival – and she received an introduction from Colin Farrell before accepting the TIFF Ebert Director Award.
The filmmaker, who is slated to direct the new Marvel movie “The Eternals”, shared after receiving her prize, “I feel incredibly lucky that the people I work with, they’re there when I’m succeeding and they’re there even more when I fail.”
Canadian singer Shawn Mendes also appeared at the online awards bash – a centrepiece of the festival, which continues until Sunday.

  • Kate Winslet Grappling With Regrets After Working With Woody Allen and Roman Polanski

    WENN

The ‘Titanic’ actress says she has to take responsibility for her error of judgment as she regrets working with Woody Allen in ‘Wonder Wheel’ and Roman Polanski in ‘Carnage’.
    Sep 11, 2020
AceShowbiz – Kate Winslet regrets making films with accused sexual predators Woody Allen and Roman Polanski.
The actress reflected on her work with the filmmakers in a new interview with Vanity Fair, years after teaming with Polanski for “Carnage” in 2011 and with Allen for “Wonder Wheel” in 2017.
“It’s like, what the f**k was I doing working with Woody Allen and Roman Polanski?” she says. “It’s unbelievable to me now how those men were held in such high regard, so widely in the film industry and for as long as they were. It’s f**king disgraceful.”
“I have to take responsibility for the fact that I worked with them both. I can’t turn back the clock. I’m grappling with those regrets but what do we have if we aren’t able to just be f**king truthful about all of it?”
Winslet previously defended her decision to work with both directors back in 2017, telling The New York Times, “Of course one thinks about it, but at the same time, I didn’t know Woody and I don’t know anything about that family. As the actor in the film, you just have to step away and say, ‘I don’t know anything, really, and whether any of it is true or false’. Having thought it all through, you put it to one side and just work with the person.”
She continued, “Woody Allen is an incredible director. So is Roman Polanski. I had an extraordinary working experience with both of those men, and that’s the truth.”
Winslet also tells Vanity Fair that while she was focused on the quality of her work for much of her career, she now realises she has a responsibility to speak out.
She adds, “I feel so fortunate to have been in a position for a good many years, where I could hold my own, keep my head down, and try and produce decent work… but it’s easy to lose one’s voice along the way and to lose sight of the responsibility that comes with that. And I don’t want to f**k that up. I know that I can always do better.”
Allen has never been charged with any crime, despite ongoing sex abuse claims from his daughter, while Polanski fled America after he was found guilty of criminal behaviour and rape following a tryst with a minor at a Hollywood party in the late 1970s. He has been in exile in Europe ever since.

  • Kate Winslet Can Hold Her Breath Underwater for Seven Minutes After 'Avatar' Training

    WENN

The ‘Titanic’ actress reveals her unique skills following diving training to prepare for her role as a ‘water person’ in the upcoming two ‘Avatar’ movie sequels.
    Aug 28, 2020
AceShowbiz – Kate Winslet has a new skill to add to her resume – she can hold her breath underwater for a staggering seven minutes.
The 44-year-old actress re-teams with her “Titanic” director James Cameron for the “Avatar” movie sequels, in which she plays “water person” Ronal.
Kate had to learn to free dive for the part and reflected on the process during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, explaining, “I had to learn how to free-dive to play that role in Avatar, and that was just incredible. My longest breath-hold was seven minutes and 14 seconds, like crazy, crazy stuff.”
And having the chance to reunite with Cameron on “Avatar 2” and “3”, which she shot in 2018, Kate added that the moviemaker has changed dramatically since she worked with him on 1997 movie “Titanic”.
“Time has changed him. Jim has become a father a few more times over. He’s a calmer person. Chilled. You can just feel him enjoying it more this time,” she smiled.

  • Kate Winslet Credits Her Epidemiologist Role in 'Contagion' for Saving Her and Family From Covid-19

    Warner Bros. Pictures

The ‘Mildred Pierce’ actress claims her role in Steven Soderbergh’s 2011 feature film about deadly respiratory virus prepared her for the coronavirus pandemic.
    Aug 27, 2020
AceShowbiz – Kate Winslet’s role as an epidemiologist in 2011 drama “Contagion” prepared her for the horrors of the coronavirus pandemic.
The actress reveals being part of Steven Soderbergh’s star-studded movie, about a deadly disease that spreads from China to the U.S. and kills millions, made her hyper-aware of the necessary safety measures early on.
“People thought I was crazy because I had been walking around wearing a mask for weeks, going into the grocery store and wiping everything down with isopropyl alcohol and wearing gloves,” she tells the The Hollywood Reporter. “Then all of a sudden, March 13 came around, and people were like, ‘F**k, where do I get one of those masks?'”
The star, who appeared alongside Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Laurence Fishburne in the film, saved herself and her family from the virus, but several friends fell ill.
“One was in L.A. and was very lucky to get on a trial using convalescent plasma and did really, really well in the space of, like, 72 hours after the treatment,” she added. “And a dialect coach who lives in London has had it, was in hospital for 11 weeks, is out, and has had every lung test, blood test, blood pressure test, and is clear of everything but just cannot get better – is breathless, lethargic, still feels very unwell (sic).”
In March (20), Winslet joined co-stars Damon, Fishburne, and Jennifer Ehle for a Public Service Announcement on the safety measures needed to protect people against the virus.
