Phillip Schofield said a number of people are feeling at “breaking point” as the coronavirus pandemic continues – and he’s one of them.
Joined by his co-host Holly Willoughby on today’s This Morning, Phillip admitted he’d had “enough” of the hardships of the year, with restrictions and isolation galore.
It all kicked off when he was joined by Piers Morgan’s wife Celia Walden and guest Lora Evans on the show, discussing their plans for the Christmas break.
Getting viewers thinking, the segment was titled: “The Big Christmas Debate: Cancel or Celebrate?”
While Lora planned to see her elderly family members, Celia said she was having a small Christmas, limiting the number of guests in an effort to reduce the spread of Covid.
Explaining her decision, Lora said she felt it was important for family members to be able to spend some time together, having endured isolation and loneliness for so long.
She said: “It’s the one day of the year that we all get together and it makes Christmas for them seeing us all, it really does.”
Lora feared people’s mental health would take a hit if they are forced to spend their Christmas apart from their loved ones.
Nodding in agreement, Phil said: “Lora you say that everyone is at breaking point.
“I know I am, actually, as a matter of fact. I’m quite happy to speak for a lot of people.
“I have had enough. I have had enough, I will follow the rules, but I’ve had enough.”
He finished: “As far as everyone’s mental health is concerned, taking a little slice of Christmas, as you say, is going to be good for everyone.”
Lora replied: “100%. Christmas Day is the one day we should break the rules, we should see our loved ones.”
Joining the conversation, Celia understood where Lora and Phil were coming from, as she agreed that “mental wellness and health” is more important than ever this year.
However, she would rather not take the risk in inviting her extended family over for Christmas, as she said: “We felt it was just cleaner to do it all very cleanly, just us three.”
This Morning airs on weekdays at 10am on ITV.
