This Weekend’s Livestreaming Events: Oprah Joins 200 Stars for a 24-Hour Benefit

Here are a few of the best events happening Friday through Sunday and how to tune in (all times are Eastern Daylight).


200 Stars, 24 Hours: Oprah, Julia Roberts and More

Friday at 8 p.m. on all major social media platforms

Starting Friday evening, and running for 24 hours, more than 200 celebrities and leaders — including Oprah, Julia Roberts, Quincy Jones, Yo-Yo Ma, Naomi Campbell, Alanis Morissette and President George W. Bush — will gather virtually for “The Call to Unite,” an event to raise money for Covid-19 relief efforts. Participants will offer messages in their own ways, whether through a performance, story or prayer.

When: Friday at 8 p.m. through Saturday at 8 p.m.

Where: The Call to Unite’s website and its Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Twitter pages, as well as SiriusXM Stars channel 109. Spotify will have segments available on demand during and after the event.


Laughs With Will Ferrell, Chelsea Handler, Bryan Cranston and More

Friday at 8 p.m. on YouTube

We’re all in need of a little levity right now, and Friday’s “Covid Is No Joke” virtual comedy benefit might just do the trick. Will Ferrell, Chelsea Handler, Patton Oswalt, Bryan Cranston, Kerry Washington, Elizabeth Banks, Jack Black and Tenacious D, Mindy Kaling and many others will put on sketches, perform stand-up sets and more, as well as offer personal messages, to raise money for the Americares Covid-19 efforts. Sia will close the show, which is hosted by Tony Goldwyn. The first $100,000 in donations received during the event will be matched by an anonymous donor.

Sting Rocks Out From Home

Friday at 3 p.m. on Instagram

Rolling Stone continues its “In My Room” series on Instagram with an at-home, stripped-down performance by the rock star Sting. The series has featured Joan Jett, Brian Wilson, Lucinda Williams and Jim James. Past streams are archived on Rolling Stone’s website.

‘Dracula,’ but Funny

Friday at 8 p.m. on YouTube

Fridays are for bloody good times. Enter “Dracula, a Comedy of Terrors,” a four-installment comedic spin of Bram Stoker’s horror story. The podcast, which premieres on Friday morning and is available on most major podcast platforms, is in the style of a classic radio play. Christopher Sieber leads the cast — John Stamos, Annaleigh Ashford, Laura Benanti, Richard Kind, Rob McClure and more — who recorded the play from their homes, to benefit the Actors Fund and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Later, most of its cast members will gather virtually for a live chat as part of Broadway Podcast Network’s Town Hall series. Viewers can join in and ask questions.

Banjo Goals With Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn

Friday at 7 p.m. on Facebook Live

A family that plucks together stays together. From their Nashville home, the banjo virtuosos and married couple Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn will perform as part of the Banjo House Lockdown livestream series. Their children, Juno and Theo, will also grab instruments and join in. Donations will benefit MusiCares Coronavirus Relief Fund. (Want more Béla? ‘Carnegie Hall Fridays’ Kicks Off

Friday at 3 a.m. on medici.tv

Early on Friday morning, Carnegie Hall and medici.tv are launching the streaming project “Carnegie Hall Fridays.” Each week through July 11, a selection of 11 webcasts of past performances will be made available for free. In addition, medici.tv will host a watch party on its home page each Friday at 10 a.m. This week’s show is Joyce DiDonato and Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s performance of Schubert’s “Winterreise,” from December 2019.

When: 3 a.m., and each program will remain available for 72 hours.

Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood From the Opry

Saturday at 8 p.m. on Facebook

Country music royalty Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood will perform live from the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. The venue will of course be empty, but it still might be nice to see stars outside their living rooms. Tune in at 7:30 p.m. for the Opry’s online preshow, Circle Sessions, featuring Scotty McCreery from his home. Brooks and Yearwood will follow from the Opry, with the host Bobby Bones.

Bang on a Can Virtual Marathon

Sunday at 3 p.m. on Bang on a Can’s website

For the first time in three-decade run, the Bang on Can Marathon, a beloved New York musical event, will move online. For six hours, 26 musicians will play live from their homes. The event begins with a performance by Meredith Monk and concludes with the Bang on a Can All-Stars pianist Vicky Chow. Other performers include Claire Chase, Vijay Iyer, Maya Beiser, Shara Nova and Nathalie Joachim. Bang on a Can’s founders and artistic directors, Michael Gordon, David Lang and Julia Wolfe, will host.

When: 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Virtual Summit for Gens X, Y and Z on Rebuilding After Covid-19

Sunday at 11 a.m. on 92Y Online

On Sunday, the 92nd Street Y will host its first-ever virtual summit about global recovery and social transformation in the aftermath of Covid-19 — focused on generations X, Y and Z. Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey, the model and activist Emily Ratajkowski, and the comedian and actor Ramy Youssef will participate, as well as speakers from politics, journalism and entertainment. Some topics include “Leading in the Times of Crisis,” “Coping Beyond Covid: Empowering Ideas to Manage Anxiety and Stress” and “Social Media as a Tool for Good.”

Street Dance Goes Indoors

Sunday at 6 p.m. on Instagram

Reggie “Regg Roc” Gray, a pioneer in the Brooklyn-born street-dance style called flexn, and his dance crew the D.R.E.A.M. Ring will perform a new work, “Revelation of Proverbs,” as part of the digital program Up Close from the Shed. The dancers have filmed themselves while enclosed in different rooms to reflect the video format, which encloses them on the screen, the Shed said. The production is set to original songs by Epic B, a longtime collaborator of the D.R.E.A.M. Ring.
