BRITs 2020 facing Ofcom complaints after viewers slam Dave and Stormzy’s performances

BRITs 2020 viewers lodged formal complaints to Ofcom concerning rappers Dave and Stormzy’s performances.

The communications regulator received over 300 complaints, with 257 complaints aimed at Dave’s “racist” performance, the Sun claimed.

Breakout star Dave bagged the best Best Album award at the glitzy bash in February, and during a politically-motivated performance, he took aim at the Prime Minister, sang a tribute to the Grenfell Tower victims and Jack Merritt – one of the victims of the 2019 London Bridge terror attack.

During his charged set, he rapped: “It is racist, whether or not it feels racist.

“The truth is our Prime Minister is a real racist.”

Making comment about the lack of support Grenfell survivors have received from the government, he added: “We want rehabilitation, now that would be amazing, our Grenfell victims still need accommodation. And we still need support for the Windrush Generation.

According to The Sun, Ofcom informed the publication that the complaints saw viewers claim Dave’s performance was “racist”.

Meanwhile, Stormzy, who closed the ceremony with a 10-minute performance, received 39 complaints, with Ofcom stating the uproar caused was a mix of racist claims and the nature of his set.

Speaking to the publication, the regulator said: “We are assessing the complaints against our broadcasting rules, but are yet to decide whether or not to investigate.”

Despite the backlash, Dave’s performance was hailed “the most impactful BRITs performances in years” by social media users.

“I’m actually speechless at Dave’s performance. Lyrically fantastic,” one commented.

“Dave is one of the best lyrical artists in the UK. Such a powerful performance,” another chipped in.
