Celebs help raise staggering £27m for charity on BBC's The Big Night In

BBC’s The Big Night In saw Children In Need and Comic Relief join forces for the first time in the history of the two charities.

Stars including Peter Kay, Catherine Tate, Joe Sugg and Little Britain’s Matt Lucas and David Walliams and even Prince William joined forces to raise cash.

During the three-hour-long event, a staggering £27.4million was donated by viewers – with the government promising to double the total.

The funds raised will go towards supporting vulnerable people around the UK who have been affected by the current coronavirus pandemic.

Highlights from the incredible evening included Little Britain returning to screens after 17-years away with Andy and Lou opening the skit sending fans wild with a joke about eating bats.

Prince William was filmed taking part in a Zoom call with Stephen Fry.

When quizzed about homeschooling Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, the Duke of Cambridge revealed it was “a bit of a nightmare,” before asking: “Have you seen anything good on TV? It’s hell without EastEnders.”

When Stephen’s character Lord Melchett suggested the Netflix hit, Tiger King, Wills replied: “I avoid shows about royalty.”

Later on in the show, ten stars who have played the famous Doctor Who over five decades recorded a message, thanking real doctors and front line workers for their commitment during the pandemic.

The doctors joined forces to say: “Tonight, we have all come together for one important reason,

“To praise, salute and give heartfelt thanks to real-life, special doctors, nurses and everyone working on the front lines in our NHS and care homes and hospices.”

Funnyman Peter Kay returned to screens, delighting fans. The comedian unveiled a new version of his hit single (Is This The Way To) Amarillo, 15 years after shooting to the top of the charts.

The star showcased a new version of the video, with key workers such as supermarket staff and frontline workers doing the famous march.

Peter was later supported on social media when he told viewers there was no pressure to donate to the charity: “Listen, if you can help tonight, there’s a number on [the] screen, if you can’t, then don’t worry about it. You’ve got enough going on,” he said.

YouTube and Strictly Come Dancing couple Joe Suff and Dianne Buswell took part in a lockdown haircut challenge.

Joe attempted to give his redheaded girlfriend a haircut, with Davina McCall recalling: “Oh no! It’s completely lopsided!”
