Duffy slams Netflix hit for 'glamorising kidnap and rape' after own experience

Duffy has labelled Netflix as “irresponsible” following the success of their latest hit, 365 Days.

The Polish-based film, which was released on the streaming platform last month, follows a woman who has been kidnapped and imprisoned by a man – who reveals that she has just one year to fall in love with him.

Since its release, the film has gone on to become the most-watched on the site but the Mercy songstress has penned a blistering open letter to bosses.

Duffy whose real name is Aimee Anne Duffy, 36, revealed in February that during her ten-year hiatus from the music industry, she had been kidnapped and held hostage. During this time, she was drugged and raped before eventually fleeing.

The Grammy-winning actress slammed the films “erotic” portrayal of kidnap and rape as “careless, insensitive and dangerous”.

In a blistering rant to Netflix top boss Reed Hastings, she said: “I don’t want to be in this position to have to write to you, but the virtue of my suffering obliges me to do so, because of a violent experience that I endured of the kind that you have chosen to present as ‘adult erotica’.

“365 Days glamourises the brutal reality of sex trafficking, kidnapping and rape. This should not be anyone’s idea of entertainment, nor should it be described as such, or be commercialised in this manner.”

The star added: “It grieves me that Netflix provides a platform for such ‘cinema’, that eroticises kidnapping and distorts sexual violence and trafficking as a ‘sexy’ movie. I just can’t imagine how Netflix could overlook how careless, insensitive, and dangerous this is.”

“I encourage the millions who have enjoyed the movie to reflect on the reality of kidnapping and trafficking, of force and sexual exploitation, and of an experience that is the polar opposite of the glossy fantasy depicted,” she continued.

The Welsh-starlet revealed on her personal website that on her birthday, she was drugged while out at a restaurant before being drugged on multiple occasions and taken to a foreign country.

“I can’t remember getting on the plane and came round in the back of a travelling vehicle. I was put into a hotel room and the perpetrator returned and raped me.

“I remember the pain and trying to stay conscious in the room after it happened,” she penned on duffywords.com.

She recalled being held in her own home before finding the courage to flee her abuser after he threatened to kill her.
