Jed Mercurio, the creator of Line of Duty, has unexpectedly turned to Piers Morgan for inspiration for the sixth series of the hit BBC drama.
On Wednesday’s episode of Good Morning Britain, the acid-tongued presenter called out Care Minister Helen Whately for the lack of coronavirus testing.
Impressed with Piers’ attitude on the matter, the writer thought Line of Duty’s fan-favourite character Ted Hastings could do with some of the TV host’s ballsy approach.
He quote tweeted the video of Piers giving Helen a dressing down, and wrote: “If Emily Maitlis was channelling Kate Fleming, then in Line of Duty 6 Ted Hastings needs to channel Piers Morgan.”

During the clip, the 58-year-old slammed the government for testing less people in the UK compared to the higher number of tests 12 days ago.
He began: “We are testing less people yesterday than we tested 12 days ago, which I would argue is a spectacular failure.
“What would you call it?”

“We know testing is really important. We have been working hard to ramp up the testing capacity in the country,” Helen replied.
He butted in: “I don’t want to hear about your ‘ramping up’ though.”
“With respect Care Minister, you’re not ramping it up. I’ve just told you you’ve done 18,000 yesterday which is less than 12 days ago. You’re going backwards, you see?”

Fans may be waiting a while for Line of Duty Season 6 as filming was halted due to coronavirus.
Work on the upcoming series had been underway for a month when the outbreak was declared a pandemic.
It still remains unclear when the new episodes will broadcast on the BBC, but in a statement released by the show’s execs it stated: “We will keep you updated with further developments in due course. Thank you.”
