Primal Scream 'Screamadelica' singer Denise Johnson dies aged 53

Beloved Manchester singer Denise Johnson has died aged 53, it has been confirmed.

The late songstress is remembered for her vocals on the Primal Scream album Screamadelica, performing with the group throughout the 90s.

Due to release her debut solo album on September 25, Johnson’s cause of death has yet to be confirmed.

The singer had reportedly fallen ill in the week prior to her death but had assured her friends she was feeling “much better” on Friday.

After news of her death broke, Happy Mondays star Rowetta paid tribute to Johnson’s life and legacy as a vocalist.

She said: “Sad sad news today.

“I have so many great memories of Denise from when we were young. We just used to sing & laugh like naughty schoolgirls all the time. A great loss to Manchester and music.My condolences to her family & loved ones.”

New Order bandmate Stephen Morris added: “Shocked and devastated to hear of the passing of Denise Johnson. An absolutely beautiful lady.”

Band Space Monkeys also paid tribute, writing: “Unbelievably sad news that our great friend, hero and inspiration Denise Johnson has passed away.

“We are all absolutely heartbroken. The world has lost not only one of it’s finest artists and voices but also a truly beautiful soul. Rest peacefully Denise. We love you.”

Born in Manchester in the 60s, Johnson’s home was filled with reggae and ska music throughout her childhood, shaping her later music career.

Making a name for herself in a variety of cover bands, she went on to join soul group Fifth of Heaven in the late 80s.

After she was introduced to Primal Scream, the group asked her to perform with them several times, though she turned them down on six occasions.

The group final convinced her to collaborate with them, and Johnson went on to appear on two of their most iconic tracks – Higher Than the Sun and Don’t Fight It, Feel It.
