Ruth Jones gives update on Gavin and Stacey writing progress

Lorraine Kelly was back on our screens on Tuesday to present the latest edition of the ITV talk show.

The Scottish presenter welcomed Welsh actress Ruth Jones to the programme.

Ruth, 53, appeared on Lorraine to discuss her second novel Us Three, which explores female friendship, but conversation quickly turned to Gavin and Stacey.

Lorraine, 60, probed Ruth on whether or not there will be a follow-up to the record-breaking Christmas special of the award-winning BBC series which aired in December last year.

After the 2019 festive episode, fans have been desperate to see more from the leading couple, played by Mathew Horne and Joanna Page, and their best mates Nessa and Smithy, played by Ruth and James Corden.

Speaking about the potential of Gavin and Stacey returning to our screens, Ruth said: “It’s lovely that people ask me.

“I wish I could say yes but James [Corden] and I love to write together in the same room.

“It is not possible at the moment with him in America, and there are not any plans but who knows?”

Ruth went on to discuss her love for her outspoken character Nessa Jenkins.

She joked: “She could easily be Banksy. I can imagine her doing that.

“The reason why people love her, and why I love her, is because she does not care what people care.

“It’s a good philosophy to have.”

Ruth and her Gavin and Stacey co-writer James have hinted about the series’ future back in April.

Chatting to Metro about the incredible success of the Christmas special, which was watched by 18.5million people, they said: “It’s mind-blowing that so many people watched our show – we still can’t get our heads around it, what a massive compliment.

“We are indebted to the BBC for their incredible support but most importantly to those 18.5 million viewers for watching. We just hope one day we can let them know what Smithy said next.”

The Director of BBC Content Charlotte Moore added: “These incredible viewing figures demonstrate the power of British comedy and the love for Gavin and Stacey.

“I want to thank James and Ruth for this gem and like everyone I’m longing to find out what happens next.”
